Limedrop

If you ever asked for a brag-worthy souvenir as a kid, only to have your dreams crushed by some play it safe relative, then chances are they brought you back a tourist tee instead. Now, it may not have cemented your status as the coolest kid in school, and you certainly couldn’t take it into show-and-tell. But by the looks of Melbourne label Limedrop, you might have been onto something. Their latest collection, Places I’ve Never Been, takes inspiration from the vintage tourist t shirts they’ve collected over the years, and the cities they aspire to visit. Slip into nomad mode wearing featherweight fabrics, and travel to faraway lands without even leaving your hood. Who knew dreaming about travel could be so fun?

Psychedelic fashion by Emma Mulholland

This is Australian fashion designer Emma Mulholland’s second collection ever (if you count her graduation show) and she has pulled it together like a pro. The colourful collection makes strong references to surf culture and throws in touches of rave, tribal and psychedelic influences. Read more

Zanerobe goodies for a fashionable Christmas

We’re buzzed about a few items in particular in the latest range from our friends at aspirational street-wear label, ZANEROBE, who we’ve been fans of since we launched Lost At E Minor back in 2005. Our faves at the moment include the Chuck Navy shorts, with rolled cuff; the Curtis Brown Sunnies, ‘with full rim metal detail in a round vintage frame’; and the Acapulco Navy Tee, with twisted side seams. Stocking fillers? Hell yeah. We’ll take them all for Christmas. ZANEROBE is hanging in the cream of stores, including Australia’s David Jones, Japan’s Barneys, the USA’s Nieman Marcus, Nordstrom and Saks. Or just get into it online. Read more

We Are Handsome Protector bodysuit

I think it’s pretty obvious that we have one serious We Are Handsome addiction here at This Island Life Headquarters. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, they have gone and added mini-dresses and leggings in alongside their signature one-pieces and string bikinis. Read more

Lalesso: ethical, fair-trade fashion from South Africa

It’s nice to know that we’re not the only ones with a warm-weather obsession. Based out of the hottest continent on the planet, African label Lalesso share our ethos for an endless summer and after discovering their current collection, it looks like they’ve found it. Started two years ago by Olivia Kennaway and Alice Heusser after an inspiring holiday to Lamu Island off the north coast of Kenya, Lalesso use soft flowing fabrics to create pieces that can withstand the heat. OeTZI3300 Shearling Booties

Sheepskin boots have been synonymous with surf culture since the seventies, but unfortunately they haven’t had the same associations with style. So when we stumbled across the new shearling booties by California-based footwear label OeTZI3300, we were confused. They may look like the perfect shoe to slip on after a dip in the cold ocean, but there’s nothing slipper-like about them. Made out of the finest sheepskin shearling, these women’s booties have mega long leather laces so you can wear them laced up high or folded down over the ankles. Read more

Oh wow – I just found out Limedrop are taking part in a competition that could win them a store with six months free rent in Brisbane Mall! If you want to help these guys out, all you have to do is vote 5 stars for Limedrop: http://www.followthefashion.com.au/#/shopfront/limedrop/view

Such a cool idea to help get up-and-coming labels off the ground.

Sometimes we need an ad to remind us of what’s important. Normal is beautiful. Keep our oceans alive. Vote. Be more fearless. The Whitehouse Post is an international post-production company whose projects are damn fine. In fact, they are the scary mix of wit and aesthetics that makes any message convincing. Long live Coca-Cola.

Who says the Swedes have got a monopoly on seasonal ice hotels? This one in Kemi, northern Finland, is the world’s largest snow castle, standing seventeen metres high and with walls that are 1,100 metres long. It has restaurants, an art gallery, a hotel and a chapel. In fact, since opening in the early 1990s, it’s been quite a hit for tourists to get married at the snow chapel. Hmmm, now that would be a frosty start to any marriage. Read more

An anonymous public school teacher known as Mrs. Q, following Morgan Spurlock’s lead, decided to eat every school lunch served to her for the duration of 2010. At the risk of her job, she documents her experience on her blog, which features photographs of the atrocious, shrink-wrapped, processed poison that she and her students are forced to choke down every school day.

I have known Hayden for almost twenty years. He has always released quality music and that is why he can wait four years between releases and his fans are still there. His latest album — In Field & Town — went straight into heavy rotation in our home and I think will extend his fan base further than even he might like.

Wearing this print will not only geek the fashionistas at their own game, but also guarantee inner peace at the bitter end. Or maybe not. But it will strike fear into the hearts of psychiatrists around the world, and you just never know when that might come in dead handy.

Pencils made from recycled newspaper

The problem with awesome things like these pencils made out of recycled newspaper is that you almost don’t want to use them.
