Infinitas by Schöpfer Yachts

If you were throwing down a couple of hundred million bucks to build your dream toy, you’d want it to stand out, right? Not so in the world of super yacht design, which for years has followed the same pattern of producing giant, shiny dreamboats, each indistinguishable from the next. But then along came E. Kevin Schöpfer.

The Boston designer has partnered with naval architects Sparkman Stevens to draw up a truly extraordinary motor yacht — Infinitas. The unusual shape was inspired by the symbol for infinity, as seen in the ‘carved out’ decks at the stern and mid-section. It also evokes a giant DustBuster, but maybe that’s just me. Still, your 300ft toy includes a pool (with bridge!!), helicopter deck, accommodation for 12 guests plus crew and wacky ‘minimalist’ interior styling. No suggestions for dealing with the endless parade of onlookers though.

Miles Thomson

Dig, hepcats! If the art of Miles Thomson doesn’t transport you to a beachside speakeasy staffed by monkey waiters serving cocktails in tiki heads, well, something must be very wrong. The Californian effortlessly blends elements of surf art, jazz iconography, cowboys and injuns, vagabonds and drunks, life and death — all that good stuff. He’s also currently working on images of crime figures such as Al Capone, John Dillinger and Jesse James for Nickelodeon’s The Mighty B, so keep an eye out for his unmistakably groovy style on the box real soon. Kid Zoom

Unable to limit his art to the streets, Kid Zoom has happily defaced banknotes, vintage Playboys, and even his own studio with his brand of eye-catching artwork. A move from the sleepy suburbs of Perth, Australia, has seen Kid take on Sydney, so expect to see a lot more distorted cartoons and weepy skulls on the East coast from now on. Read more

Haran Kumar’s Indian street kid photos

Photographer Haran Kumar has a special affinity with the street kids he shoots in New Delhi — not so long ago, he was right there amongst them. After fleeing an unhappy family situation in 1994, Haran joined the throngs of homeless children who live in and around New Dehli railway station. Eventually he was plucked from the tracks by aid organisation Salaam Balak Trust and given another chance at school before becoming part of Dutch photography project Home/Live — providing cameras and instruction to homeless kids in 11 cities around the world. From Cyglo Tyres come these awesome bike tires which come with fluoro ‘long-lasting LED bulbs embedded into the tyre tread or wall to form a perfect ring of light to maximise the visibility of cyclists to other road users’. Yes, yes, that’s all good. But they look pretty cool, too. Read more

On those rare occasions when I feel the need to treat myself to an absolutely mind (and wallet) blowing meal, I love to come here. The restaurant is housed in an old diner (the old trailer style diners) which makes for some fun ambiance. Plus, the menu changes every week, so there’s never a written menu. The waiter comes out with a pen and writes the entire menu down on the butcher paper covering your table. Aside from all that, the food is absolutely unbelievable!

The issue of abortion has hardly ever been represented so honestly by a movie. Knocked Up and Juno gave the pro-choice movement a boost, and of those two, only Juno came close to confronting the issue. In the Princess of Nebraska, the main character suffers through indecision, naivety and turmoil that seem much closer to reality. Read more

Cloud Control have just unravelled a newly recorded track, Gold Canary, from their forthcoming 2010 album. It’s straight up pastoral Blue Mountains goodness. I actually heard it live earlier this year and it sounded quite rad.

As a visual learner, the illustrated cooking instructions for the recipes on Recipe Look are easier for me to follow than the standard written recipes found in most cookbooks. I wish Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall would do an illustrated River Cottage book.
