Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros
Edward Sharpe looks so much like the ideal Western image of a young Jesus Christ, it’s almost unsettling. Conceptually, that might be half the point, irony and all that good-looking fun as a rock star, or perhaps not. Regardless, Sharpe and his nine, yes nine, Magnetic Zero friends make one hell of a wanderlust band — and we can’t wait to see them again on their current stateside tour. In particular, we’d like to acknowledge that awesome old-school bus of theirs (though it’s probably not all that good for the environment).
It just seems like such an epic trip on that thing! Image and all, it’s like a red flag to come out LA looking this good — and yet sounding this great, too. They’ve been playing their free-spirited souls out to every crowd they meet, according to a recent chat on the road, and they’re being well received as they keep on roaming. If you’re in need of a lively act to cheer you up, don’t miss these saints when they come marching in.

You know how something can completely escape your notice until it’s pointed out to you – and suddenly it’s everywhere? It was like that with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros for me. There’s been a tremendous hum (a more chilled form of buzz) about them online from all corners that I’ve only just tapped into, but boy am I glad I did. In principle, it’s the ex-Ima Robot front man embracing love, happiness, and community in a 10-piece ensemble. In practice, it’s part Arcade Fire, part Devendra Banhart, part unique, and a hell of a lot of fun.

Something at the root of old American rock n roll will always grip the contemporary audiophiles, no matter what. It’s that raw soulfulness that came pouring through the speakers then, just as it might now, whenever played loud and careless of what a neighbor might think. It’s been a while since we last heard the clamorous sound of We Have Band, but for obvious reasons. Having toured extensively in 2009, the London-based trio took the later part of last year to enter the studio with producer Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Interpol, Depeche Mode, These New Puritans). Last night, I caught Pagan Fest at B.B. Kings in NYC. I missed the band that I was the most excited to see, T˘r, but Turisas and Ensiferum more than made up for it. Americans have been pretty late to warm up to folk and Viking metal, and bands of this sort almost never tour the States, so it was gratifying to see that the show was sold out, and that the crowd was so exuberant. If ever there was an opinion needed on the current Hip Hop scene, this is the one everyone should look to. More than likely, this homie is going to diss, if not one, then all of your favorite rappers and probably offend you. But I dare someone to say he is not speaking the truth. Plus, whose voice better to hear it in than that of Ghostface, Na’mean? I can read this blog for hours with a smile on my face.
So much of the Baltimore scene seems geared towards day-glo-clad party people, so it’s nice that introspective, country-tinged folk is also well represented here in the form of Noble Lake, a Wye Oak-related project fronted by James Sarsgaard, who I hope won’t mind me calling the second coming of Townes Van Zandt.
