UK’s classic double decker bus gets a green makeover

But don’t worry, the new hybrids — made by European favorite Volvo — will retain the very British red color for which they are well known for. The new B5L operate with a hybrid drivetrain, which allows the bus to stay in electric mode up to twelve mph. After that, the B5Ls will operate in diesel, which will cut fuel consumption by 25 percent while reducing gas emissions and noise. And while only six of these highly efficient vehicles are currently in service in London, it’s all part of a trial run. If all goes well, more of the B5Ls will be hitting the streets within the next couple of years, making the delightful city more of a delight.

England Up Close

This Is My England is both the blog and the pen name of a Londoner who looks at things up close. The photography zooms in on the small details of the decay and strangeness under the surface of the taken-for-granted things all around us. Many of the short poems here do roughly the same job.

Cornwell’s Museum of Witchcraft

Cornwall, England is considered a great weekend getaway for the over-worked under-played Londonite. So much to do! Hiking, horseback riding, castle touring, country pubbing, garden tours and my favourite, surfing! For those of you who find these past-times a bit prosaic and cliched, this little Cornish beach town is also home to the Museum of Witchcraft where the Richel Collection is on exhibit, the world’s best collection of ritual and sex magic artifacts. Dutch collector Bob Richel inherited the collection from his father-in-law, Mr Eldermans, who had been a Magister of the Ars Amatoria, a group using sex magic. Now, there is a dowry I’ve yet to hear of! It gives a whole new meaning to the The Red Hot Chili Peppers song Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic.

New York’s offshore windfarm?

While the green industry and most of the world were looking to Copenhagen for inspiration, New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg was in a helicopter, overlooking Denmark’s offshore windfarm, Horns Rev 2, the largest of its kind in the world to date. Bloomberg has his own offshore windfarm energy project already in motion, and with the Long Island wind project estimated to be operating at 700 megawatts, Horns Rev 2 (operating at 209 megawatts) will be easily replaced as the largest offshore windfarm. Turkish-born, New York-based artist Deniz Ozuygur’s hilarious pieces tell sophisticated jokes that also, via crude, distorted, and disembodied forms, tap into a more innocent and tactile relationship we had with our bodies in grade school. Her Self High Five Machine is hysterical, as is her Alterations series, in which she messes with common kids’ items — Gummi Worms, Funyuns, a gum eraser — before repackaging them and returning them to the manufacturer. Nashville artist Tim Hooper, aka Mr. Hooper, loves pipe smoking robots, black bears that look a little tweaky blowing bubbles, and brooding solitary rabbits. Many of his pieces are done on vintage postcards and wood. Gene Autry and Elvis lurk on his psyche, too. Read more

On those rare occasions when I feel the need to treat myself to an absolutely mind (and wallet) blowing meal, I love to come here. The restaurant is housed in an old diner (the old trailer style diners) which makes for some fun ambiance. Plus, the menu changes every week, so there’s never a written menu. The waiter comes out with a pen and writes the entire menu down on the butcher paper covering your table. Aside from all that, the food is absolutely unbelievable!

The work on the Buero NY website is amazing — it’s my art direction obsession! So much work, so many cool clients … what a fantasy.

The latest band to make LA proud is tropical-nu wave act Abe Vigoda. These guys are so new and so exciting that even your grandparents don’t know who they are. Yet! They describe themselves as tropical punk, but I like to think of them as nihilistic rockers — no form, no shape, just chaos. If LA’s new breed of punk popstars such as Health, Meiko Meiko and Pocohauntas make you tremble, then this band are sure to get you very worked up.
