TraPhik video spoofs American Boy by Estelle
Last year’s hit American Boy by British singer Estelle featuring Kanye West spawned a number of parodies and remixes online (including a hilarious Egyptian one). The one by TraPhik was surprisingly good beyond being merely amusing, which led me to watch a few more of his videos.
The LA-based rapper of Thai decent has a pretty slick flow, and his freestyle skills make him a contender to be the next Jin or at least that’s how people will probably brand him. In actuality, his approach to hip-hop is refreshingly light-hearted and (dare I say) innocent, rapping about romance and partying rather than thug life and drugs. His debut album, Rush Hour, is catchy, positive, and smooth, and though it won’t make a lasting impression, it’s certainly fun and entertaining listen.

I actually say that comparing him to Jin is what the marketers will do. Plus, I am asian myself, and incidentally, I’ve been listening to MC Ren, Geto Boys, and Biggie, who rap about thug life and drugs. I also don’t claim that this is dude is the greatest thing to happen to hip-hop, I just think he’s amusing and talented.

Yah, perhaps I overanalyzed that sentence before my second morning coffee
Couldn’t tell if it was a cynical jab at marketers or just recycling their mentality…

Benjamin Duke depicts insane landscapes busy with catastrophic car crashes, birthing mothers, smarmy twenty-somethings, and heartfelt human interaction. His work speaks to the overload of information in our culture, right down to the choice of canvas size – some of his paintings are as tall as eight feet, dominating the gallery space – yet there is a beauty to his economic brush strokes and dazzling pallette that leaves a strong impression on the viewer. Every time I listen to this song, it puts me in a trance’. Read the rest of Gang Gang Dance’s Secret Playlist.

Not feeling it. How many times is he not on beat or trying to find it? That ain’t slick. And this post is also wack, comparing him to Jin (cuz they’re both Asian) when there’s really no similarity. And what kind of hip-hop has Lost at E Minor been listening to? Thug life and drugs? Whah? I thought ya’ll had better taste in hip-hop than to rely on pop stereotypes…
