Japanese big rig art

Snapped in Aichi, Japan, at a Truck Show for kids, this photo by Roger Snider captures a customized refrigerated delivery truck with around $100,000 worth of artistic enhancements. According to Snider, on this day, some ‘300 of these Art Trucks from various truck clubs showed up to help fund-raise for less fortunate kids’.

String Gardens

One part folly, two parts whimsy, Fedor’s String Gardens are a little reminiscent of a cosmic galaxy. Inspired by a Japanese botanical style called Kokedama, the objective of these installations is to simply bring plants to eye level. But they do so much more than that, don’t you think? Read more

Barafu

A few nights ago, I was invited to a lovely Japanese foodie event held at Daniel Bouley’s testing kitchen. Being a vegetarian, the inventive food — including sea urchin, pork on a base of roe, and a ‘vegetarian’ asparagus dish with caviar — was unfortunately all lost on me. However, the gift bag, containing a small package of Barafu was most intriguing. Barafu, aka ice plant, looks like a small aloe plant, with many translucent beads covering the surface. Read more

The Kissaway Trail on My Secret Playlist

The Kissaway Trail have a new album entitled Sleep Mountain due for release on April 20, via Bella Union. Sleep Mountain adds in dabs of electronica to the breadth of guitars for a contemporary and vulnerable rock classic. We asked them about the music that inspired the recording. They started with the Joanna Newsom song, Peach, Plum, Pear [listen below]: ‘A really good song from a great debut album, made by one of the best female artists ever’. Connect the Dots tattoos

In my next life, the one that will be spent in a daze walking lazily up and down the hipster dome of Brooklyn’s Bedford Avenue, high fiving passing musicians, and eating cheap noodles from the local deli, I’ll have one connect the dot tattoo that spells out the name of my band. And another with the name of my ex-girlfriend. Ah, yes. That will be cool, indeed.

My town is one of foghorns at five am, the smell of salty air and the sound of seagulls, Peets coffee, steep hills and die hard fans and loyalists. For those of us who have been here in San Francisco for some time now, we know all the secret gems of this small city — from Clarion Alley, to Army Street, from Irving to Broadway. Read more

I haven’t bought a CD in a while but I was strolling down Wellington’s Cuba Street looking for a bit of inspiration the other day when Liam Finn’s music tapped me politely on the shoulder and dragged me into the music store. Liam is New Zealand music royalty, of Neil Finn descent, although — with his wild hair and beard — he’s looking a bit more like a young Jesus these days. The record is made with the help of an analogue loop machine, and you’ll find the kind of stunning instrumental crescendos that I haven’t heard since The Beatles Hey Jude. He engages emotionally and spontaneously, with both skill and showmanship.

Scanners’ new single Salvation

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
