Driving to Warwick, in upstate New York, yesterday, through the winding wooded sections of untouched greenery, far removed from the incessant rattle and thump of the Manhattan streetscape, this beautifully hypnotic track by Australian duo, Empire Of The Sun, came bursting through the car speakers at the perfect moment. The faintest slither of mid-morning sunshine was weaving its way through the thick foliage, the speakers were vibrating with an unhurried bias, and everything in the world just seemed right. Things continue to improve for New York’s metal scene, if Batillus are any indication. The sludge/doom trio from Brooklyn offer crushingly heavy, down-tuned and down-tempo instrumental riffage that sounds like what a mutant that has crawled out of Newtown Creek might have on his iPod. The band recently added vocalist Fade Kainer of Inswarm (Jarboe’s touring band) to its line-up.

Fred Perry has, with the consent of her family, just released a very mod collection created in collaboration with Amy Winehouse before she died. The proceeds from the collection’s sales will be donated to the soon-to-be-created Amy Winehouse Foundation.
