Driving to Warwick, in upstate New York, yesterday, through the winding wooded sections of untouched greenery, far removed from the incessant rattle and thump of the Manhattan streetscape, this beautifully hypnotic track by Australian duo, Empire Of The Sun, came bursting through the car speakers at the perfect moment. The faintest slither of mid-morning sunshine was weaving its way through the thick foliage, the speakers were vibrating with an unhurried bias, and everything in the world just seemed right. I love the ominous, moody atmosphere of young Swedish-Finnish photographer Martina Lindqvist’s landscape shots. She’s only just graduated from university, but already has the Jerwood Photography Award 2008 under her belt and a spot in the prestigious UK Portfolio Magazine. Melbournes laneways are cluttered with themed, designer bars. The challenge seems to be which is the most hip, funky and individual bar. Step in Section 8, an old inner city carpark furbished with warehouse pallets, patio heaters and a couple of freight containers, converted to serve you drinks. The vibe is fittingly low-key, with background music played at a reasonable level, frequently changing decor, and a variety of options to quench your thirst. It’s casual, fun and simple. I’ve been reading Julia Wertz’s web comic, The Fart Party, which is simply a first person account of her every day life. The artwork is pretty rudimentary, but that works to the comic’s advantage, making it rather accessible and earnest seeming. Updated every few days, it’s not hard to keep up, and you never have to wait long to get your next fix.
