Ultra Supper Club, Toronto
One of the best designed restaurants I’ve eaten at, Ultra Supper Club, located in Toronto’s bustling downtown area, offers a fun and playful ambiance and a beautifully conceptualized menu that fits neatly into that burgeoning culinary category of ‘modern fusion’. Which means, exactly? A bit of this, a bit of that, all elegantly presented and rounded off with a sparkling wine selection which complements the variable dining options.
The interior at Ultra is very cool, with bold colors offsetting a striking curtained section which, when we were there, was housing what looked to be a bachelorette party with wickedly mischievous intentions. And props, too, to the excellent down-tempo music, which works in well with the low-key but classic minimalism that permeates the restaurant’s overall aesthetic. [photo by Alison Zavos]

Turtle: The Incredible Journey
This beautiful documentary charts the journey of a loggerhead turtle from its traumatic hatching on a Floridian beach and its frantic scramble to make it to the sea, to its battles with the currents as it makes its way on its genetically programmed path of discovery through the temperamental oceans. Partly fictionalized to allow for the many years over which the ‘journey’ takes place, the cinematography is stunning and the storyline engrossing, making this one of the standout screenings at the recent Toronto International Film Festival.

Casio Keyboard Brooklyn trio Au Revoir Simone are about to release a collection of remixes and covers their musical friends have recorded of songs found on their second album, The Bird Of Music. Titled Reverse Migration, the record features re-workings by Best Fwends, Teenagers, Darkel, and more. We caught up with them recently. Why and when did you decide to release a remix album? Annie: ‘Our friends were making so many wonderful versions of our songs we wanted to share them with the world’. How did you select the artists? Annie: ‘Mostly they were friends who told us they wanted to do remixes! Very fun and easy’. Reverse Migration is out November 11 through the band’s own label, Our Secret Record Company.
