Southern Alps’ slow fruits cereal
I’ve got a serious addiction to dried mangoes. Granted, it could be worse, but with all the preservatives, additives, and sugars that make their way into dried fruits like those I eat in bulk, the after effects can be pretty unappetizing. Enter Southern Alps, a UK-based health conscious brand that produces totally natural mueslis, snack bars, and ’slow’ fruits.
The fact that it’s ’slow’ is an important distinction: Southern Alps’ dries fresh mangoes, apples, strawberries, and other fruits in slightly warm natural air for a painstakingly long time, which somehow negates the need for chemicals. When finally ready for market, these healthy products are slipped into stylish minimalist packaging. There is admittedly a down side though: Southern Alps’ products are a bit expensive, to say the least.

I want to live in Tokyo, to be immersed in a city where quirky is cool and everything can be turned into cute cartoon characters. This awesome packaging of tiny baby crabs with a spicy topping may be a little literal, but it’s more fun that anything Birdseye have ever released.

One place showcasing England’s new energy of cheesemaking is Neal’s Yard Dairy, based in London. Here, the fine work of over 70 organic artisanal cheesemakers is carefully selected from farms through Britain and Ireland. Most people crochet hats, gloves, and scarves. Clare Crespo, however, knits oysters on the half shell, hamburgers, sushi, and smoked salmon. Yup, it’s yarn intended to make your mouth water. In her latest collection, Crespo’s creative talent is focused on Mardi Gras, that infamous New Orleans carnival celebrated in her native Louisiana. Traditional, hyper-local eats, like seafood gumbo, beignets, catfish poboys, and soft shell crabs, have made their way into her inventive crocheted ode to the city. Read more

New York and Zurich-based artist Urs Fischer’s entropic sculptures and installations blows apart people’s expectations of what to expect at a gallery. Last year’s installation, You, at Gavin Brown was a 38-foot-by-30-foot crater dug into the gallery floor. His huge, ambitious works seem frantic and impulsive despite the immense planning and meticulous execution they often require. His mockery of physics, and the enormous scale and shock-and-awe quality of his work suggest the god-like potency of an artist, at least within a gallery space. Read more

Beijing-based band Hanggai write original songs in the traditional folk styles of their Mongolian ancestors — throat-singing, horsehair fiddles, lutes — spearheading an Asian version of the old-time revival. Though it’s only through the digital age that the rest of the world can access this beautiful music, it makes you want to slow down and reflect on what we’ve lost as a species. This stuff makes every flavor of the month indie band seem vapid and meaningless.
New York-based designer, and sometime Lost At E Minor contributor, Deanne Cheuk visited Beijing prior to the Olympics as part of the New Grand Tour. We touched in with her to see how she found the experience of being over there: ‘we visited some really modern art galleries, which seemed to be on par with with the best galleries in New York City’.
Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more
