I remember when I got my first Boombox (i think we called them Jamboxes in Alabama) and my sorted tape collection included Jonzun Crew, Newcleus, and Run DMC. I’m not sure if I spent more hours breakdancing in the mirror or pulling the tape back into the cassettes when they would spill out due to poor ejections. This new exhibit (at New York’s Clic Gallery until December 5) and book by photographer Lyle Owerko highlights all the Boomboxes from that era in stunning detail.

The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images.
