I’ve always been a huge Milton Avery fan, so the instant I stumbled across the work of Californian artist Chi Birmingham, I was head over heals. I really enjoy how every year Birmingham decides to take his distinctive style in a new direction, from various American landscapes to basements (as if, after all those wide open landscapes, he needed to feel a little more protected?), to various everyday rooms (not quite ready to venture back into the wide outdoors, but tired of the dank basement day in day out?). Quiksilver’s Limited Collection, a premium extension of the main Quiksilver line featuring a collaboration with Disruptive Pattern Material and Hardy Blechman of Maharishi, debuted in Spring of 2007. The latest collection combines a sophisticated, minimalist aesthetic with nautical and military influences.

Some facts about San Francisco indie pop outfit, My First Earthquake: the band wrote, recorded and shot a video for a holiday Hanukkah song that has now racked up more than a quarter-million plays on YouTube; Singer Rebecca Bortman used to be in a ‘could-have-been-famous’ psych-metal band called Ice Queen; bassist Chad Thornton chose to stay behind when the band he was in with Keith Murray of We Are Scientists moved to New York; guitarist Dave Lean helped develop essential components of the iPod; drummer Andre Salcido played in a ‘trucker punk’ band who once shared a stage with the metal band GWAR. Ok, ok, enough already. This video is fun.

Beast is a new collaboration between the Montreal-based French producer, Jean-Phi Goncalves, frontman of the electro band Plaster, and singer Betty Bonifassi. Their sound inhabits a place where the cinematic grandeur of Portishead meets the immediacy of Rage Against the Machine. Bonifassi calls it ‘trip rock’, invoking the way haunting choirs and glitchy electronic bits run underneath saw-toothed bass and grinding guitars, and she may be onto something. TIME magazine’s annual Person of the Year issue is coming out this week. I illustrated one of the runner-ups, but of course, I have to keep my mouth completely shut. I don’t know who is the winner though. On TIME’s website, you can see all the past covers of this most talked about issue of each year. It’s a good time to look back history and learn from it anyway, don’t you think?
I don’t get Flight of The Concords. I just don’t find it funny. I also don’t get most comedy these days. It’s so derivative and clichéd. Everyone wants the same laughs. Japanese artist Toshiya Tsunoda’s field recordings will blow your mind without blowing your eardrums. By placing sensitive microphones inside empty objects, such as bottles and hollow logs, he captures vibrations inaudible to the human ear.
