|Some facts about San Francisco indie pop outfit, My First Earthquake: the band wrote, recorded and shot a video for a holiday Hanukkah song that has now racked up more than a quarter-million plays on YouTube; Singer Rebecca Bortman used to be in a ‘could-have-been-famous’ psych-metal band called Ice Queen; bassist Chad Thornton chose to stay behind when the band he was in with Keith Murray of We Are Scientists moved to New York; guitarist Dave Lean helped develop essential components of the iPod; drummer Andre Salcido played in a ‘trucker punk’ band who once shared a stage with the metal band GWAR. Ok, ok, enough already. This video is fun.

Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design
Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Named after the first openly gay politician in US history, Harvey Milk make some rather testosterone-heavy tunes. While appealing mostly to the stoner-rock and indie-metal set, the quintet from Athens, Georgia, aren’t afraid of a little melody, as the almost pop track Motown on their latest album, Life … the Best Game in Town, proves. But more often than not, the band gets down and dirty with some knuckle-dragging sludge rock. Amid the haze of searing guitar squeals, menacing power chords, and seismic bass rumbling, though, are some almost math-rock flourishes that hint at the brains behind the brawn.
