ACO’s Great Romantics tour

There’s something magic about being in the same space as those performing at the very height of their field. The Australian Chamber Orchestra have just kicked off their Great Romantics national tour and it was a treat to see them live in Newcastle, Australia for their first show. I’m no chamber orchestra aficionado, but I know good music when I hear it. And the tones played by lead violinist Richard Tognetti are as sweet as you could hope to hear. Can’t hurt having a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin under the chin. A tour worth checking out.

Park8 Hotel, Sydney

The Park8 Hotel is one of Sydney’s lesser known boutique hotels, but it’s the place to stay if you fancy taking Sydney by foot. Around the corner is Sydney’s busiest shopping strip, the Pitt Street Mall. And across the road is the iconic Hyde Park. Surry Hills, Kings Cross and Darling Harbour are not far from the Park8. We stayed in a 1 bedroom loft apartment, which includes a wonderfully large spa bath and rainshower. Read more

Here are some pretty clever shirts designed by Bas van de Poel and Daan van Dam for the Dutch team in anticipation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. I still don’t get why this isn’t a more popular sport in the US.

Back in the day, New Zealand pop absurdists, Split Enz were the finest damn Australasian band around. This track, I Walk Away, off their final album — Spellbound — is their ultimate moment: a hefty dose of pure melodic majestry, wrapped around the aching lyrics and quirky arrangements of genius frontman, Neil Finn.

An anonymous public school teacher known as Mrs. Q, following Morgan Spurlock’s lead, decided to eat every school lunch served to her for the duration of 2010. At the risk of her job, she documents her experience on her blog, which features photographs of the atrocious, shrink-wrapped, processed poison that she and her students are forced to choke down every school day.

Milke are inspired by the third French wave of Kitsune artists, electro pop, Stuart Price and The DFA, all mixed in with the pop sensibilities of Eurythmics, The Cure, Talking Heads, Stevie Wonder and Prince. Their new single, Love Get Out Of My Way, is out on Friendly’s label, Gulp, home of Joe and Will Ask, and New York scream-pop act, Black Peter Group. We have it available for free download in the Music Download section of the Lost At E Minor site [psst, it's in third column]
