Buff Monster Toys

Odd, simple and surreal, these toys are really more accessible art objects. Sporting bit of a Keith Haring meets Murakami attitude, Buff’s toys fill any remaining generational gap between aging hipsters and their hyper plugged-in progeny. My wife and I collect Buff’s stuff, as do my two children.

We checked in recently with one of our favorite illustrators — and Lost At E Minor contributorYuko Shimizu: How has 2008 started for you? ‘I was just in the French Riviera with eighteen other illustrators and designers. It was our annual New Year’s retreat. People from all over Europe and North America meet up and spend a week together, exchange information, go see things together, or just have fun. It was fantastic, although we didn’t have the best weather’. Read more

Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.

This year’s Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, staged over 603,000 square meters, was a stunning exhibition of colour and creativity amongst mounds and mounds of ice and imagination. Read more
