Amazing Baby

Rewild is the new album from Amazing Baby, as apt a mission statement as the Brooklyn collective could get. Says lead singer, Will Roan, of the recording: ‘We are fascinated with escapism and creating small worlds that can stand alone or be connected as stories within the context of our album. We write the songs for fun’.

Full On

The best new music I’ve heard recently is coming out of the East Coast. The band Full On is fronted by Shana Falana, who has been part of the music scene for the past decade, with a voice that is both gorgeous and tough. She’ll grab you and pull you in. Rawk on!

Hypernova video, directed by Richard Patterson

Brooklyn-band Hypernova’s new music video was shot and directed by Common Machine’s Director of Photography, Richard Patterson, on Profoto’s spanking new, lighting packs, enabling the video to be shot on a stills camera. There are actually more than 16,000 stills that make up the video, the first time it’s ever been done like this.

Kyp Malone’s new album, Rain Machine

I love Kyp Malone. I’d love him even if he weren’t guitarist and singer for one of the best bands out there, TV On The Radio. See, Kyp’s just a rock solid, totally unpretentious, good guy. He gives good hugs. Our kids play together and have sleepovers. I had mostly forgotten that Kyp was a rock star. Read more

FAIL! Man wears crack jacket to drug trafficking court date

From the ‘what were you thinking’ file comes this news report of a man in Fort Lauderdale accused of drug trafficking who turned up to court for his trial wearing a jacket with a cartoon recipe for cooking crack cocaine. Yes, smart indeed.

New Banksy artwork angers the Catholic Church

Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. And who are we to disagree? Read more

Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design

Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Photographer Judith Dekker creates poetry with her camera. As I sift slowly through her portfolio, I am inspired to jot down small rhythmic sentences to match her mystical work. Yet, in this case, for fear of putting myself on the line, I will use someone else’ gifted talents to compliment her images: ‘Because I am not the same person who wrote what he reads with such great yet divided attention’ – Spencer Selby.

How old must Kermit be now? Not to old to collaborate with skater-friendly retailer Supreme and photographer Terry Richardson. Kermit, who usually wears nothing, has been hooked up with some new threads to advertise the brand. It seems Kermit and Terry are the perfect work partners: they’ve even released a video clip documenting the shoot.

Back in the ’90s, just as the gangsta rap phenomenon was winding down and hip-hop was fragmenting into its own subgenres, Prince Paul and RZA kicked off the short-lived horrorcore fad with their group Gravediggaz. At the time, the melding of dark, gothic themes with hardboiled rap seemed gimmicky and awkward, a strange extension of the early and awful attempts to bridge hip-hop and metal, but on closer listen, the now defunct supergroup was way more innovative than they were given credit for. Although these things look very cool, they could not possibly be comfortable. The artist behind them, John Kelly, wanted the clogs to resemble shoes for the Nike78 exhibition.
