Brooklyn Flea
With spring fully arrived, it’s brought with it the return of the Brooklyn Flea, a mecca for crafts, vintage and food. Having gone out of my way to attend the Fort Greene flea almost every Saturday since it began almost a month ago — to stuff my face with the myriad gastronomical indulgences available and peruse the amazing wares set out on folding tables throughout the courtyard of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High — I only wish that I had a larger belly and more disposable income.
Among just a few of the highlights I’ve encountered so far are The Winter Water Factory, with their charming women’s and children’s clothes made from fabric printed with their own custom designs; BonBon Oiseau’s jewelry, created from various vintage elements; Morgan Levine of Amble Through Bramble and her beautiful crepe paper flowers; and Elyssa Ettinger, with her ceramics modeled after antique milk jugs and cozy knits. Despite his name, I’m guessing German illustrator Frederik Jurk must be a cool guy because his images, his limited palette and gorgeous textured line work are awesome.
I was immediately taken with the work of California artist Zack Paul. Especially the images created on various bits of driftwood and found natural objects. The most perfect backdrop to his clean, geometric images.

I love the detail and the sense of escapism in Ray Caesar’s digitally rendered artworks. His work reminds me a little of Mark Ryden’s, without the slabs of meat and the lofty price tags.
Henry Hargreaves‘ introduction to the photography industry began in front of the camera as he was the pin-up boy for such fashion houses as Prada, YSL, Jil Sander and others. Four years ago, Hargreaves settled in New York and began work out of his studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, shooting fashion and still life for clients such as Ralph Lauren, New York Magazine, GQ, NYLON, Boucheron, Marie Claire and others. Comedy troupe Summer of Tears edited itself into the classic ’80s movie Teen Wolf, starring Michael J. Fox, providing a new and gut-bustingly hilarious side-plot.
This is the greatest invention. Ever. Commuters in South Korea can now do their grocery shopping whilst waiting for the train to arrive using their mobile phone to scan the QR codes of the virtual goodies they want.
