Launching Newcastle’s The Clinic
I moved to Newcastle late last year, though I still do a lot of work in Sydney. What a great city Newcastle is. It’s been breath of fresh air for me. For the first few months, I worked on Lost At E Minor and our online pubishing company, Conversant Media, from home. But then I heard about the Renew Newcastle project, launched by one of Australia’s creative stars (in terms of making things happen, not talking the talk), Marcus Westbury.
Inspired to work with interesting and interested people, I put in an application for a shared creative space which would drag people out from their sunrooms into an inspiring environment.
On May 15, we had a party — generously sponsored by our friends at Lovells Lager — to celebrate the launch of The Clinic.
The Clinic is a creative space in Newcastle which apart from us, currently harbours graphic designers Illumination Ink, Neon Zoo; editorial stylist and publisher Tim Neve; and film and music producer Stuart McBratney.
Renew Newcastle and The Clinic show the great power that passionate and creative people can have on shaping their work environment and the community around them. I’m loving being a small part of the process.

Powerage, Aussie teenage rockers tear it up
Ok, so the leadsinger of this Australian band, Powerage, is barely into his teens, and already he sings like Axl Rose and Brian Johnson’s love child. Perhaps he is? They are unbelievably good, and will rip it up on stage for many years to come. For those about to rock, Powerage salutes you.

Australian International Animation Festival
Between October 21-24, the Australian International Animation Festival is heading to Newcastle, just out of Sydney, where 110 films from 26 countries will amaze, delight, amuse and confuse — perhaps all at the same time. There will be ‘two international programs, a showcase of Australian animation, highlights of SIGGRAPH Asia, a digital program for for the brave, a late-night hour of oddness in Late Night Bizarro, and for those under 18, there’s a special kids program of international animated treats’. Tickets are $5 per session or $30 for festival pass to see all eight programs. No pre-sale — at the door and cash only. If you’re in the area, be sure to check it out. Read more

Disney meets couture in The Spring Issue of The Junction + Darby The Magazine, a free zine published in Newcastle, Australia that aims to capture the best in fashion, art and life from the region in general by Lost At E Minor fashion contributor Tim Neve. Out of the dress up box from Abicus comes new season shorty-shorts, nautical stripes and preppy cuts (a’ la Mini Mouse). The fashion and styling whimsically mixing childhood nostalgia with rock attitude, embracing the playfulness of the Australian Spring. Read more

Feiyue shoes have arrived in Australia and I can’t wait to get a pair of these treads on my hoofs. They look like they could be the new Onitsuka Tigers, but with more edge and personality. The story goes that these shoes were big in China in the 1920s, before a brand revival in 2006 got them some traction in Europe. You can join the chat over at their Facebook page or check them out in person via their Australian stockists, Tuchuzy (Sydney), Nique (Melbourne) and Brave New World (Perth). Read more

There’s something magic about being in the same space as those performing at the very height of their field. The Australian Chamber Orchestra have just kicked off their Great Romantics national tour and it was a treat to see them live in Newcastle, Australia for their first show. I’m no chamber orchestra aficionado, but I know good music when I hear it. And the tones played by lead violinist Richard Tognetti are as sweet as you could hope to hear. Can’t hurt having a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin under the chin. A tour worth checking out.

Agree Andy – it’s definitely the way forward.
It needs someone like Marcus who has the drive to get an initiative up and running. Easier said than done. But the benefits for the town and people involved are enormous.

I live on the Central Coast, smack bang between the two cities and you could say we have the best of both worlds here, but when we have the urge to get a little cosmopolitan, of late we have be heading north to Newie for our cultural fix…..Cooks Hill has a nice vibe, down the road the Art Gallery, Honeysuckle Wharf, a beer at the Brewery to watch the ships roll in and they even have their own Harry Cafe de wheels! If I was ever gonna be a city slicker I know which town I’d be heading for, good move Novocastrian Zac!

Back in the ’90s, just as the gangsta rap phenomenon was winding down and hip-hop was fragmenting into its own subgenres, Prince Paul and RZA kicked off the short-lived horrorcore fad with their group Gravediggaz. At the time, the melding of dark, gothic themes with hardboiled rap seemed gimmicky and awkward, a strange extension of the early and awful attempts to bridge hip-hop and metal, but on closer listen, the now defunct supergroup was way more innovative than they were given credit for. It’s a fight: Mr Bacon vs Mr Tofu. Who will remain at the top of the foodchain? If you’re a toy freak, this will go nicely on the desk alongside your Berbrick, Kaws and Macbook Pro. Yup, it’s never too early to start planning Christmas gifts.
When you first see The Gershwin Hotel, you might think it’s an art gallery or a public art installation. The white, bird-like shapes sticking out of its red facade is certainly unique, without being too loud. The rooms are rather small but the location and accessible price range makes it all worth it.

is it TooLate? Is it? Never! This Italian-made watch has a beautiful minimal design, comes in lots of colors, is water proof and goes for less than $30. Hot damn! 10,000 of them were sold in the first ten days after their release and half a million in it’s first year of distribution. Apparently the Italians are wearing two or three of them together as part of some bizarre fashion clique. Wonder if the rest of the world will catch on?
Before MTV, MySpace, and viral marketing, album covers had the potential to make or break a band. First impressions count, and many a music geek have purchased albums on the cover artwork alone. So what these guys were thinking is simply beyond me. Although, if anyone has a spare copy of Devastating Dave the Turntable Slave then I know someone, ahem, who could take it off you. Read more

cool stuff… could this be the next workplace r/evolution ?
imagine shared workspaces for all those accountants or sales people who work from home… finally, like minded people can share the watercooler that is industry / skills specific.
