Yacht’s Psychic City
by Damn this song is catchy! Yacht is the cunning alter-ego for duo Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans — an accomplished science writer, artist, and veteran of the LA noise scene. After they recorded a tongue-in-cheek love letter to LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy in the form of their track, Summer Song, Murphy signed them to DFA Records. All of which brings us to their new album, See Mystery Lights, and this track off it: the bouncy, raga tinged Pyschic City. We have it available for free download via the Music Download section of Lost At E Minor, along with new tracks by La Snacks, Magic Wands, Polly Scattergood, and Reed KD.

YACHT founding members Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans live in Portland, Oregon and Marfa, Texas, and consider themselves ‘generalists’ in the fields of music, art, writing, and everything in between. Their new album, See Mystery Lights, has just been released, along with companion materials ranging from book and mixtapes to a limited-edition playable copper record of mantras. We checked in with Jona to get his thoughts on the music that inspired their own album and he started with the Radha Krishna Temple song, Hare Krishna Mantra: ‘A not-so-secret-thing about YACHT is that when we see Hare Krishna monks dancing down the street in their orange robes and shaved heads, it takes a great deal of self-control for us not to run after them. Magic Wands are a burgeoning young duo playing some really fun music these days, and the most recent remix of Warrior sounds especially sweet to my ears this week. Baltimore’s Teeth Mountain create pulsing, shamanistic, tribal-sounding tracks from a bunch of floor toms, cello, mandolins, keyboards, saws, and whatever else they can get their hands on. The chaotic music they make is noisy, roughly-hewn, and impulsive-sounding, but that seems to be the point. They’re trying to evoke a sort of post-apocalyptic primitivism. It will be interesting to see where this collective takes their aesthetic.
Don’t Shoot the Puppy is one of the more difficult flash games out there, sure to engage you for hours. Strategy is the key, but quick reflexes and a photographic memory don’t hurt either. It’s rare that a computer game challenges the intellect and hand-eye coordination to this extent.
As a non-coffee drinker, I’m not going to rant about the coffee. I’ve heard, though, that the coffee is damn good. But I am going to talk about something else: food. Oh. My. God. Sydney’s Single Origin cafe have this awesome meatloaf sandwich and a raft of sourdoughs and prosciutto and roast lamb and chevre and chunky steak pies and yogurt with compote and four-cheese toasties and baked beans and … oh! Don’t forget Karlie’s special homemade lemonade! Karlie is always in the house so you know that it doesn’t come from a can and arrives at your table with that sour tang that reminds you of the annual Royal Easter Show. Set in a remote Chinese village in the 1920s during a cholera outbreak and with a revolution bubbling in the background, The Painted Veil is a wonderfully tortured love story which excels on all levels.
