I love the deep sense of mystique and other-worldliness that resonates through Bill Carman’s artwork. Of his creative process, he says: ‘Things seem to crawl from my brain, through a sketchbook, and end up on some beautiful surface. I am an image maker who illustrates, draws, and paints’.

I have to respond to my knee jerk response, although I know no one will be reading this because it’s an old post. i just want to have it here for posterity and my peace of mind. All too common shallow response is indicative of our web culture. Having access to wonderful things like Lost at Eminor compiles on this site opens the door for criticism. Criticism is a great and potentially healthy thing. The problem comes in the form of ignorant criticism. Criticizing with likes and dislikes is no longer criticism but a shallow shopping list. If one were to truly compare my work with Mark Ryden’s work it would be obvious that there are no connections except perhaps some subject matter here and there. Last time I checked people were painting bunnies and babies long before he did and will continue long after. I admire his work and think he is a wonderful painter. His palette is rich and unique and his skills are obvious. But he and I are after very different things and it is clear in the body of work. I welcome honest informed criticism but have always been a little grumpy when it comes to uninformed, offhanded, critiques which come from hit and run webists who take no responsibility for what they say. Kind of like anonymous evaluations. Never liked them never will. I hope somehow this comment gets back to Lindsay but I know that it probably won’t. i do feel better though.
