What Just Happened?
by Is Hollywood as ramshackle, dysfunctional and self-obsessed as celebrity gossip magazines and news programs would have us believe? Apparently, yes. This brilliant new comedy stars Robert De Niro as a producer dealing with all of Hollywood’s pressures, which include an enigmatic and headstrong director, a ruthless studio boss, a demanding actor, a neurotic agent, and a personal life packed with ex-wives and children.
These trials are all cleverly woven together around one revolting scene in a new film, which again proves the fickle nature of the movie business. It’s a world where everyone needs to talk about their problems and pay lip service, and is wonderfully realised through a razor-sharp script and delightfully fun performances. Scenes including a Bruce Willis tantrum and the cold-blooded murder of a dog are instant classics.

Seldom has organised crime been so honestly and unflinchingly portrayed. The lives and role of Italian crime families in America has been often chronicled, but Gomorrah looks at modern crime families in Naples and Caserta by focussing on five different stories. It’s gritty, violent and engrossing, as each story touches the other and builds the tension. Broader in its scope than the Brazilian film, City of God, it’s also just as good. The most affecting art gives us a lens through which to make sense of the world and the statistics listed at the end of this film remind us that the action in Gomorrah is not fiction, but a dramatisation of the truth.
Valentino: The Last Emperor — Fashion documentary
A documentary about one of the world’s most famous fashion designers? Hmm. Not a film I’d ever choose to see, but sometimes we do what we don’t want to in order to make friends happy. It’s called compromise apparently, and the experience reminded me that any material, if well structured and presented, can make a decent film. The filmmakers follow the over-tanned Valentino Garavani and his long-term lover and business partner Giancarlo Giammetti. Read more
Larry David plays a slight variation on his Curb Your Enthusiasm incarnation, spouting some of the most articulate rants on humanity in Woody Allen’s new comedy. I enjoyed last year’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but this is definitely better. It’s a spectacularly executed comedy farce, with the action constantly escalating along the way, adhering to the old comedy formula of putting the characters through hell for big laughs. Read more

We checked in with sometime Lost At E Minor contributor and all the time brilliant designer and illustrator, Deanne Cheuk, and asked her what had been keeping her busy of late: ‘I’m curating an issue of Theme magazine; designing some prints for Sue Stemp and Something; and working on new drawings for a show in January 2010 at the Monster Children Gallery in Sydney. In terms of the next big project I have coming up, I have sunglasses that I designed with Colab coming out later this year. Yay!’

It goes without saying that Hip Hop has taken a few very low hits in the past decade. Thanks to the likes of 50 Cent and company, it accounts for around 40% of all music sold in America. It’s a huge industry. So where does that leave Hip Hop artists doing something a bit different? Lord T and Eloise wear wacky outfits, make crazy music and bring a whole lot of fun back into Hip Hop. What’s more, they’ve started a new genre called ‘Aristocrunk’. Watch out!
