FREELAND ‘DO YOU’ WITH MIXES BY JOKER / MOONBOOTICA / HIGH RANKIN / PANTYRAID OUT NOW

“The remit on this one was if Led Zeppelin were making electronic music what would it sound like? And this is what we came up with. Helped quite a bit by having Tommy Lee on drums, creating that big John Bonham style drum sound”.

Long a highlight of his sets ranging from Coachella to Fabric, iconoclastic DJ/producer Adam Freeland finally releases Do You the first salvo from his long-awaited artist album, Cope(TM), set to come out in June 2009 on Marine Parade (and available to pre-order now at Freeland.FM). As expected with the U.K. bred, Los Angeles based Freeland, Do You offers the unexpected, switching up his usual uptempo bangers for a sinister 100 BPM groover that eludes any club-genre pigeonholing. Indeed, Do You proves a mid-tempo can still set dancefloors aflame: like DJ Shadow deconstructed by Can, Do You explodes with an irresistibly massive, sinister Moog synth hook, which is quickly mangled with choppy glitch edits and thundering kicks and snares that split the difference between Bonham and Run-DMC. Co-produced by Marine Parade’s latest producer-DJ star Alex Metric (Autokratz, Locarnos, Black Daniel, Hard-Fi, Eddy Temple’s ‘Remixer of the Year 2007,’ Annie Nightingale’s BBC alternate) and mixed by Alex Greggs of South Rakkas Crew fame (Yo Majesty!, Beenie Man, and, er, N*Sync), Do You, serves as the perfect introduction to Copes mind-bending collaborations, which include tracks with Joey Santiago (Pixies), Brody Dalle and Tony Bevilacqua (Distillers/Spinnerette), Jerry Casale (DEVO), Brooklyn shoegazers SoundPool, and Tommy Lee (yeah, that one).

US TOUR DATES:
5/21 – Costa Mesa, CA – Detroit Bar
5/22 – Los Angeles, CA – The Echo
5/23 – Daly City, CA – Cow Palace

i don’t need it, i am sure of it, to be honest i am not even sure what i am suppose to be winning. But just long as you @ LAEM realize that by not letting me with this comp will only full fill my ongoing lack of having any witty to say in comps like this. I am happy.

krystal said | 5 June, 2009

i have had a horrible week… this would make it so much better.

Meggie said | 6 June, 2009

If i don’t I may collapse into a black hole of the lack of this fabulous music and prize (mainly the collapsing part is caused by the lack of music)… I’ve seen this happen before and trust me, it is not a pretty site.

Mike said | 10 June, 2009

I get around ( and so will your stuff!!!)
Be prepared if you choose me…

Tanja Cilia said | 12 June, 2009

While I am as impressed as anyone with an artist’s ability to render accurate and lifelike human figures, I’m more often compelled aesthetically by looser and more stylized images such as Camilla Engman’s. The wide-set eyes, bulbous bodies, and skewed proportions of the people and animals in Engman’s paintings lend them a certain expressiveness and melancholy. Read more

Riffing on the idea that ‘eating was tending toward breathing’, Harvard professor David Edwards, in conjunction with design studio Le Laboratoire, has created Le Whif, the breathable chocolate. No chewing, no calories, and it comes in mint, rasberry, mango, and plain chocolate flavors. The product may just be a fancy scratch-and-sniff sticker, but it looks so sleek and design-y.

This entertaining documentary follows a group of seemingly clichéd American teenagers in their last year of high school. Through a comprehensive recording of their lives it reminds us that, when examining anything in detail, there is no such thing as a cliché. The naivety and hope of each student shines through, providing a memorable and accurate portrait of a middle-American high school. Read more

Austin-based Future Clouds and Radar, the eclectic art-pop ensemble headed by Robert Harrison, has recently released its sophomore recording, Peoria. Where their self-titled debut album showed Harrison as the central figure in a large musical cast, Future Clouds and Radar’s latest offering finds the core band focusing their kaleidoscopic vision into a single cinematic narrative about the illusory nature of mortality. Throughout, Harrison stays true to his genre-hopping eclecticism, leading the journey through a maze of fuzz-box vocals and ethereal keys.
