|You do not buy the Big Fat Duck Cookbook for inspiration for weekday suppers. This is a cookbook you pore over, gazing at the tantalizing photos and stunning imagery, while your stomach rumbles. It is gastronomic theatre and food photography at its ultimate. And rightfully so; the visual imagery would have to match the brilliance of its author: extraordinary master chef Heston Blumenthal of The Fat Duck fame. Through words, photos, and illustrations Blumenthal recounts his history, recites magical yet mind-bendingly complex recipes, and deeply explores the philosophy and science behind gastronomy. Throughout the pages, photographer Dominic Davies – who was recently honoured with the James Beard Foundation Award for cookbook photography – captures the genius of Blumenthal’s mastery.
Striking images of Dali-esc, oozing, dripping caramel and translucent radishes that capture light in a glowing orb are daring and creative. Curvaceous, lucid globes of salmon roe are so exquisitely captured you can almost feel the tense skin breaking on your tongue, gushing briny, saltiness. Hot and ice tea with streams of steam delicately, densely pouring over the cup’s rim make you yearn for a cold winter night spent by a fire, warming mug in hand. The Big Fat Duck Cookbook is bound in real cloth, saturated with multiple ribbons, and slipped snugly into a gorgeous slip case. And, of course, like Blumenthal’s restaurant, it comes at a price. But if you can’t make it to The Fat Duck (or even if you can), Davies’ masterpiece is sure to satiate wherever you are.

I have followed the Clayton Brothers’ work since the mid-90s and had the pleasure of meeting them a few years back. Their art is a reflection of what great people they are. It’s really compelling to see their work in person. I love it and can’t get enough of it. I wish I had a lot more money so I could have a big one in my house.
On my recent visit to Barcelona, my love for Animal Farm led me to the Plaça de Geroge Orwell. There I discovered Oviso. The tiny café features hand painted walls and low wooden benches, where inhabitants enjoy great coffee for €1 and discuss music, beer, photography and the hordes of tourists that bustle just beyond the quiet square.
It’s hard not to sigh at another vector face or skull and diamond combo. I’m guilty of skull overindulgence myself. But Six Letter Word — aka illustrator, Diogo Potes — balances skulls with other macabre themes to create art that actually looks fresh and interesting. Read more
