Next to Heaven
by Washington DC video artist Rob Parish spends his days rummaging through Archive.com, collecting together vintage film material and editing and overdubbing it to create these fantastic little shorts, posted weekly on his website, Next to Heaven. Some, such as Episode 49 — where a man reminisces about his macho sporting childhood while the video shows a timid boy putting on makeup — are deeply touching, while his other work flits between sharp humour and real poignancy.

Nathalie Djurberg is a Swedish video artist who is best known for her clay-mations, videos featuring animations made out of clay with music by Hans Berg. Peter Glantz’s remarkable Being Impossible performance art
Providence-based performance and video artist Peter Glantz has been working on a long-form solo show that incorporates video, puppetry, and Glantz’s weird alien alter-ego. I saw the premier performance of it a few months ago, and it was amazing. I can only imagine he’s refined it even more. Here is the creepy video teaser for it.
I’m mesmerized by the weird yet strangely wonderful work of Daito Manabe, a Japanese video artist who puts electrodes on his face to make glitchy electronic music.

Irina Werning’s Back to the Future photo series
Argentine photographer Irina Werning has complied this beautiful and poignant collection of portraits of adults re-enacting images of themselves as kids. From what I gather, she has asked people to submit photographs of themselves and then returned with them to these same spots at the same times in their lives. She’ll take this project round the world, from Baghdad to Eurodisney, and is looking for willing participants. Read more
Bug fighting in South East Asia
Of all the little idiosyncratic activities I’ve come across since living in Southeast Asia, this nears the favourite. The bug fights are held in a cemetery about half an hour outside of Chiang Mai late in the year when the stags are at their randiest. It pulls an impressive crowd who bet some hefty dollars on the winner, claimed by the beetle who throws its opponent off the revolving log and struts (or crawls) to victory. Read more

If you ever happen to find yourself riding across the mid-west on horseback with an iPod jangling about in your holster, be sure to let Calexico soundtrack the experience. They’re cleverly fusing a range of genres, mixing some good old country with US indie, a bit of jazz and even, in 2003’s Feast of Wire, some smatterings of electronica. Lead singer Joey Burns gives a healthy amount of cowboy twang and the soaring orchestral background and sweet country guitar licks add a real atmosphere to the music.
