La Dolce Vita: Slow Food on Film
Through images and sound, film has the power to evoke emotions and memories; through tastes, scents, and textures, so too does food. Enter Slow Food on Film. Combining screening and eating, this four-day festival aims to encourage a new critical awareness about food culture through films, shorts, and documentaries that offer innovative thought on gastronomy and its heritages.
Kicking off in Bologna, the event launches with the Italian premiere of Terra Madre: a modern yet enduring documentary by Ermanno Olmi that takes an intimate look at Slow Food’s annual event that promotes food communities and artisanal traditions. But if old-school Italians talking about parmesan isn’t your thing, the festival has a wide-range of compelling events like shorts competitions and food nightmare sessions where stomach-turning issues like cannibalism and cloning are examined. Better still, during the festival, Bologna will turn into a smorgasbord for the senses, with artisanal street food from around Italy lining the cobble-stoned streets. Slow Food on Film is on now until 10 May in Bologna.

Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. I stumbled upon this cool street style blog that shows original and edgy people on the streets of Helsinki. Curxes (pronounced ‘curses’) are one of the most exciting new bands you’ll hear all year. Roberta Fidora and Macaulay Hopwood make music that will suck you in, invade your brain, and make you lose sense of time. Their music is somewhere between Depeche Mode and Crystal Castles.
