Zadig and Voltaire’s Tome I La Pureté

I always knew it was going to be a good day when I woke up to the aroma of maple syrup and the tunes of Fleetwood Mac. Happy times in the kitchen with Dad were to follow. Bringing his mastery to the pancake world, he would whip up shapes of Micky Mouse, hearts, and even spell out my name. No matter where I am, when a get a whiff of that candied smell of enchantment, I smile in memory of Papa’s Pancakes and a time of pure innocence. Alas, a new smell arrived under my nose the other day. It was one that exuded the mystery of a place far from earth, mixed with milky blends to bring you a genuine sense of comfort.

Zadig and Voltaire’s new scent, Tome I La Pureté, comes with the story of a fallen angel: a messenger of utopia reinspiring Thomas A’Kempis’ quotation, ‘Purity and simplicity are the two wings with which man soars above the earth and all temporary nature’. The packaging comes in book-form to represent its literary ode, reminding us that the perfume itself had a life before it evolved into a scent.

Sadly, it’s still in research phase. But where there’s smoke …

I spent the formative first six years of my life in Wellington, New Zealand, a beautiful windswept city framed by a magnificent harbour in one direction and a stunning collection of green, rolling hills in the other. It was here, on a return visit many years later and deep amongst the clipped accents and ruddy faces of the weather-beaten locals, that I stumbled upon the vast catalogue of the then Dunedin based record label Flying Nun. And what a roster of acts they housed — The Chills, The Bats, The Clean, Tall Dwarfs, The Verlaines, and my favourite guitar-pop band, Straitjacket Fits. Read more
