Catherine Huerta’s Mice Birds and Fish
Catherine Huerta illustrates wildlife, fantasy, and her own tribal influences. She is a member of the Pasqua Yaqui Tribe and grew up in Window Rock on the Navajo Indian Reservation. She was born in Arizona though is based in France and has been working as a freelance illustrator in Europe and America. Of late, she has been designing stamps for the French Postal Service and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. My favorite is her Mice Bird & Fish illustration. All very tongue in cheek, of course.

If you’re heading East towards Brick Lane and are hungry, forget about all those cheap and non flavorsome restaurants, which surround the area door to door, encouraging you to come in for a cheap bite. Go around the corner, instead, off Bethnal Green Rd and you’ll find a Turkish favorite, Tas Firin. It’s such a nice surprise: even the décor has a charm, with shoes on the makeshift roof, which in turn is the drinks station. The hummus and halloumi are a must. My favorites are the Adana and Iskender dishes, but don’t order them together as the portions are huge.
MIIIIIIKKKKKKKKEEE SNNNNNNOOOOWWW. Well, actually, Miike Snow. While everyone is obsessed with his track Animal, I’m loving his track Black and Blue from his new self-titled album.

The results are stunning, with the nineteenth century structures providing an amazing starting point. New York-based Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu has been featured on Lost At E Minor several times over the past couple of years. I love the sense of drama her work conveys, the apparent colour clashes that somehow gel despite pre-existing rules about their compatibility. We checked in with her to see what she’s been up to of late: ‘I just came back from a week in Georgian Bay in Canada. No internet, no cell phone reception for a week. It was fantastic! Tallest Man on Earth, the rasping Swedish folk singer-songwriter and one of the unsung heroes of 2008, recently recorded the beautiful song A Field of Birds, a nice adjunct to his summer album release, Shallow Grave. His sound is so loose and unmanicured, and carries a poignancy reminiscent of the rusty, early Bob Dylan.
