Francesco D’Isa

Francesco D’Isa studied philosophy at Università degli Studi di Firenze and has a deep passion for porn, calling himself a ‘pornpope’ after, of course, ‘artist’ and ‘curator’ on his Facebook profile. When I came across his work, I thought it was a combination of Frida Kahlo and Gustav Klimt, if the two legends spent an afternoon together discussing life, politics, war, spirituality and the demise of the spirit. This image is titled Eden, from Francesco’s most recent series of works.

Remedios Varo

I own three replicas of para-surrealist painter, Remedios Varo. All three paintings involve masks, secret identities and (depending on your take) hidden self-truths. If I could afford it, my entire house would be a gallery to this amazing artist often overshadowed Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and recently passed Leonora Carrington, all of whom Remedios met after fleeing occupied France in 1941 for Mexico City. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to. Big Bird, Fozzie and the gang at Sesame Street team up with Microsoft to create a Kinect-based show interacting with the kiddies. Gets them off the couch and moving along with the shows. I want to play.

History is the story of the winners, and western dominated culture recounts few triumphs from the east. Mongol is an effort to correct this balance, and the eastern influence is evident in much more than just the storyline. It is more like a fairy tale or legend handed down through generations, than based on fact, with mythical elements playing a major part, and the character’s motivations remaining simple. Read more

There’s no place in the world like Cuba’s colourful and crumbling capital. Riddled with contradictions, it’s a foodie’s worst nightmare and a photographer’s paradise. People really do dance in the streets, drive 1950s Chevvies, and smoke big, fat cigars. However, it’s all set to change. In December last year, while Cuba celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its revolution, President Obama said he’d soften America’s trade embargo, and Raul Castro said that he’s ‘ready for talks’ with the new American government. While this could mean long-overdue relief for Cubans, it could also leave one less truly fascinating place on the globe to visit. So go. Now.
