|On dark, gloomy days, I usually listen to dark, gloomy music like Skepticism or Evoken. Sad music cheers me up when I’m sad, and doom metal cheers me up when it’s rainy and gross outside. The other day, it was wet and overcast all day, but I decided to mix things up by putting on Japanese chiptune pop band YMCK. The cat I live with immediately started purring and rubbing himself against the computer speakers. I guess all the sugary-sweet beeps, boops, and harmonies made him fall in love with my laptop. It made me smile, but I think if I listened to anything that happy on a sunny day my pancreas might explode.

Orchestral, moody, and alternating between bleak and hopeful, Year of No Light’s latest album, Ausserwelt, has the narrative peaks and valleys of an epic novel. The French ensemble gets lumped in with other post-metal bands due to their current lack of a vocalist, but with Shiran Kaidine from Monarch on guitar, there is a clear funeral doom and extreme metal influence — put some death growls over this record and it could pass for Skepticism.

Oh boy, this is fun. Omaha’s Tilly and the Wall are kitsch-cool-camp-vauderville meets pop-folk-flamenco, with a tap dancer for a drummer and some serious, serious charisma for a calling card.
This isn’t an outdoor art installation, but it is still somewhat curated. Or maybe hoarded is a better description. Somewhere in the inner western suburb of Sydney’s Summer Hill, there is a brightly coloured collection of garden gnomes on display. The owner of the home is yet to be seen, but there are hundreds of gnomes, side by side, all with equally dopey expressions on their faces and accompanied by a second fixation: caterpillar soft toys.
