Mollydooker wines

Whenever I can’t decide which wine to choose, I go for the one with the coolest label. That’s exactly how I discovered Mollydooker. This award-winning vineyard not only boasts some of the most creative, innovative, and artistic labels of any bottle on the shelf, but the Australian winery produces delicious stock with stellar ratings. Year after year Mollydooker’s stash wins accolades for its voluptuousness, richness, and pure taste. The winery’s bottles are consistently rated one of the world’s best value, and rating guru Robert Parker even awarded a hefty 99 out of 100 points to their awe-inspiring series.

Despite the bar being set at towering heights, the label’s ingeniousness manages to compete for center-stage. Designed by Australian-based agency, Mash Studio, the stickers are playful and colorful, inspired by antique books and old-school advertising illustrations. Reflecting the attention to detail that Mollydooker puts into its wines, all type was hand drawn and on certain series, custom fonts and writing recite poetry. Every label also weaves in quirky stories that narrate the history of the Mollydooker husband-and-wife team’s grape-crushing life. With superb attention to detail and formidable talent both in the design and the wine-making, Mollydooker is a definite knockout.

Wine by Some Young Punks

Wine by Some Young Punks is, as you could guess, the product of three young Australian winemakers who have a reputation for solid wines and standout labels. The images plastered across the bottles are inspired, ‘bright and intense’ — intended to echo the wines themselves. Selected from original 1950s book covers, the packaging, like the wine, is juicy, tantalizing, and charismatic. And just as the name of one of their signature wines suggests, passion really does have red lips.

Australia’s Alpha Box and Dice wines

Among ‘garage’ wine makers, Justin Lane is a legend for his passionately crafted wines, eclectic style, and loveable rogue-vintner ways. So after years of making other people’s bottles notorious, Lane’s newest incarnation — his own unique wine label — has been well anticipated. So too has its accompanying cellar door, AB&D Wine Salon. Here, Lane’s Alpha Box & Dice wines can be tasted in this quirky, though stylish, space. And the wines, like the cellar door, are full of character. Read more

Wine in a beer bottle

If there was any doubt that beer is the new wine, it can now be put to rest with the introduction of this new wine packaging: wine in a beer bottle. That’s right, we’re talking about a Swartland Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend out of South Africa cheekily disguised within a kitschy brown beer bottle with an equally cheeky title, Bob’s Your Uncle. Red Velvet Fried Chicken

So you think you’re all cupcaked-out? Had enough of the trend, eh? Well get ready for more because at American Cupcake, their red velvet is all the rage – on fried chicken, that is. Yup, at this San Francisco-based eatery, chicken is marinated in red velvet cupcake batter (um, YUM), dredged in red velvet cupcake crumbs, and then deep fried. (We understand if you need to re-read that sentence.) But wait, there’s more! Read more

Full Circle: a carbon-saving wine series

So maybe you’re a sucker for design and you just can’t get over the aesthetic flaw of wine in plastic bottles, or perhaps you adhere to the school of thought that believes plastic tampers with a wine’s quality? But did you ever consider the carbon emissions involved in carting around such heavy cargo as glass bottles full of wine? The winemakers at Yealands have which is why they now offer a carbon-saving wine series known as Full Circle bottled in lightweight eco-friendly recycled plastic. Read more

As a kid, anime, manga, and Japanese toy design captivated me much more than anything available in America. There is something almost apocalyptic about the intense black and white decimated, chaotic landscapes that French artist Didier Blondeau lovingly depicts.

The duo of Brendan Monroe and Evah Fan are one of those creative, powerhouse couples. Though two entirely individual artists, the influence they exert upon one another is subtle yet undeniable. Both create the kind of art that that makes you giddy with pleasure, while the lack of pretension puts you completely at ease. You get the undeniable sense that these are two people who simply live and breathe creativity and love every moment of it. Two amazing artists with a wholly individual take on life and the world around them. I had the pleasure to grill them both. Read more

The white, bird-like shapes sticking out of its red facade is certainly unique, without being too loud. The rooms are rather small but the location and accessible price range makes it all worth it.

Cloud Control have just unravelled a newly recorded track, Gold Canary, from their forthcoming 2010 album. It’s straight up pastoral Blue Mountains goodness. I actually heard it live earlier this year and it sounded quite rad.
