Barnaby Barford’s chavtastic porcelain ornaments
Childlike figurines of old inspire Barnaby Barford’s work. He uses found objects, some mass-manufactured and others antique figurines, to create vulgar and devilish stories, meaningful or just light humour. His latest project, Do It Again I Didn’t Record, is a tongue in cheek chav snapshot of ‘happy slapping’, a tragic reality of today’s youth culture. Barford has also completed an animated project commissioned by Channel 4, which had me in stitches, a haunting yet sweet love story.

Midnight Juggernauts are another awesome Australian band. There’s something amazing going on in the land of Oz, with Empire of the Sun, Pnau, and these guys. I really wish they were coming to London to brighten up my dark, mysterious winters. Come on boys, you know you wanna!

I’ll let you in on a secret. If you’re heading East towards Brick Lane and are hungry, forget about all those cheap and non flavorsome restaurants, which surround the area door to door, encouraging you to come in for a cheap bite. Go around the corner, instead, off Bethnal Green Rd and you’ll find a Turkish favorite, Tas Firin. It’s such a nice surprise: even the décor has a charm, with shoes on the makeshift roof, which in turn is the drinks station. The hummus and halloumi are a must. My favorites are the Adana and Iskender dishes, but don’t order them together as the portions are huge.

Was poking around at Dad’s Big Plan and found this rather awesome looking concept car called the Maininki, which was designed by Finnish designer Antti Eskeli. It has an adjustable chassis length so it can morph from a luxury sedan into a compact hatchback.

The Dutch, the beautiful Dutch, in terms of architecture anyway. Here they have led the way again with this reuse of an old crane dock. A new glass office building, with a climatic façade of double glazing, motorized louvers on the outside and full length windows on the inside, hovers above the old dock. Read more

Music isn’t necessarily a serious venture. It’s almost funny when you find some you know will grate to dust the stiff upper lipped critics of the world. Every now and then I like the type of sound that hops around the edge of your ears without working its way into your brain and messing up the seratonin levels. And Californian 16-piece tropical-ska-pop group, Still Flyin’, do just that for me. It’s a good laugh, quite catchy, and an awesome live experience so I’m told: especially with the sun out, a can of cider in your hand and a bunch of grinning faces skanking around you.
