Gary Baseman’s La Noche de la Fusión
For his latest exhibition, La Noche de la Fusión at California’s Corey Helford Gallery, Gary Baseman introduces his Carnivale Girls, inspired by Brazil’s Carnivale, along with the ChouChou Buddha, which breaks down the arbitrary walls imposed by societal convention that often prevents a true sense of self. Baseman’s work encourages us to destroy those negative forces in a ceremonial ritual, celebrating the madness of our lives. The exhibition runs between May 2 and 23.

This website hosts a nice collection of quirky, sometimes mind-boggling, sculptures from around the world. There’s a certain Dali-esque feel to a lot of them – those surreal, dreamy hallucinations turned into a warped reality. I’ve always been a sucker for art that really catches you out for a few seconds, and these certainly do that.
The controversial and multifaceted International contemporary art exhibition Trailblazers hits Sydney this month. Boutwell Draper Gallery will grace multimedia works by pioneering Australian, American and European artists from November 19 onwards. I’m thrilled to see groundbreaking pieces by Ben Frost, Kill Pixie, Copyright and Cleon Patterson [above], to name a few. The vast array of paintings, photography, sculpture, installation, video and digital arts is on display until December 13. C’mon, you know you want to culture your soul.
