A seriously wrong dress?
When I worked for a magazine in China, we got away with a lot of semi-dirty sight gags and visual puns in the layout, such as a drooping Eiffel Tower to accompany a piece on erectile disfunction or a pair of Ben Wa balls to illustrate a story about testicular cancer. Mostly, we were just trying to test the state censors to see what we could get away with. We Westerners on staff would chuckle, acknowledging the immaturity of our jokes, but claiming that the “Nanny State” (as we lovingly referred to the Chinese government) forced us to behave like children. We also occasionally realized that our jokes went over the heads of many of our Chinese colleagues. One theory was that Chinese people hadn’t been conditioned through a Freudian mindset to see cigars as anything but cigars, and therefore didn’t perpetually have their minds in the gutter. Perhaps the designer of the dress above (sold by online retailer Light in the Box, no less) really only sees in his or her design a beautiful pink rose blooming from the wearer’s crotch.

For some reason it’s rare that you see London in this light. Nightscapes of big cities are usually reserved for New York and Tokyo, for example. Perhaps the comparatively scarce skyscrapers makes the city less photogenic in that respect. So photographer Jason Hawkes’ work is long overdue — he has really brought the city to life, and given it that lick of golden light that a long-exposure is good for.

Major Stars are another throwback ’70s rock band, playing Sabbath-flavored, guitar-driven psych tunes. But what sets them apart from the horde of Zeppelin-worshipping clones is vocalist Sandra Clarkson, whose voice is clean and feminine, but loud and aggressive — she doesn’t try to affect a Janis Joplin rasp. The band’s music also skews heavily towards the Acid Mothers Temple end of the ’70s revival thing rather than the Wolfmother side, another plus. Nope, rock still isn’t dead.
Creating modern-vintage inspired by 1950s Australian housewives and rock’n'roll style pin-up glamour, Peta Pledger has been producing one-off, made-to-measure or small-run garments and accessories since 2003. Her love affair with the sewing machine began in 1988 when — like many lovely ladies — she couldn’t find any clothing that flattered her figure. Read more
