Lexie Mountain Boys
by Lexie Mountain Boys are another interesting act I got to check out at the Transmodern Festival. The five women who make up the group never sound the same twice, making a cappella, improvised, stomp-and-holler chants inspired by everything from Inuit throat-singing, Sacred Harp singing, to backwoods preachers speaking in tongues. For their performance this weekend, they dressed all in white and stood in front of a screen on which they projected a video of scary, clown-like faces with their eyes and mouths green-screened out.

Alaa Wardi creates music from everything, even his beard
I recently stumbled on this gorgeous clip by musician Alaa Wardi and his filmmaker brother Seena Imamwerdi, from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. In ‘Ma3gool’ (pronounced Ma’a'gool), Alaa uses sounds from voice, mouth, and body only, without the use of any musical instruments. He even uses the sounds made by him scratching his beard!

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV
The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.
Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

There’s something quite captivating about the muted tones and soft textures of Anna Fraser’s photographs. The Australian designer has a very precise sense of framing, which is reflected in the slightly insidery, but beautifully balanced perspective that her work provides on places and scenery that only few people ever get to experience. By her own admission, Fraser ‘prefers things that are not usually very fashionable. Like beige, lots of beige and maybe a bit of taupe’. We think she might be onto something. Read more
We got the inside word from Josh Diamond of New York experimental group, Gang Gang Dance, on the music that is moving him right now and he started off by propping the beautiful Ryuichi Sakamoto track, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence: ‘It’s just an amazing piece of music — serene, austere (in a heavy, beautiful way), emotional, a great mix of electronic sounds, patient, and a wonderful melody, with a quality of yearning for a better place.
