Illycaffè expresso cups
Illycaffè has paired up with renowned Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar and actress Penélope Cruz to create a unique set of art collection espresso cups. Designed by the iconic director, known for his passionate portrayals of the contemporary world, the set was launched in conjunction with the release of the latest Almodóvar-Cruz film, Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces). The espresso cups feature the Spanish-born actress in a colorful, pop, Warhol-esque photogram, and are numbered and signed by the director. Illy has also partnered with Almodóvar for a retrospective exhibition of his work at the Círculo de Bellas Artes cinema of Madrid, which runs until 19 April. And if that’s not enough, the two have joined together for another art collection series — due out in the fall 2009 — that will portray six emblematic scenes from Almodóvar’s films.

Austin band The Low Lows are one of my most prized finds of the year so far. It’s introspective music — staggered harmonies delivered by a distant, agonised voice that filters through a wall of tranquil guitar distortion and measured drumming. Every instrument carries a powerful emotion, sometimes keeping their distance from one another, floating up and around the airwaves, and other times colliding and crashing back to earth.

Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life. The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images. When the pusher is activated, the dial springs to life in 3D, with an LED light and afterglow effect. Read more
