A Take-Away Show of Sigur Rós
by The Take-Away Shows is a series of improvised video sessions with musicians, set in unexpected locations and broadcast freely on la Blogothèque. The project is founded by producer Chryde and filmmaker Vincent Moon, who in the first year, managed to make over a hundred films. Each one is beautifully filmed and professionally sound recorded, creating an important archive of an era in music. This one is a recording of Við Spilum Endalaust by Sigur Rós in November of last year in Paris.

Sigur Ros’ uncooperative NPR interview
Oh boy! Icelandic group Sigur Ros may produce the most ethereal, melodic and startlingly original music (right down to creating their own language to sing in), but they certainly weren’t in the mood for this interview as part of NPR’s Bryant Park Project. Sullen, unfriendly and uncommunicative, the band shifted uncomfortably in their seats for five minutes as the increasingly desperate host tried to coax some responses out of them. Yup, some things just weren’t meant to be.

A visually stunning short 3D-animated film directed by Antoine Perez, Celine Desrumaux, Francois Pons and Gary Levesque, Yankee Gal took a year to complete and was produced at the always formidable French computer graphics school, Supinfocom.
This beautiful clip for the Australian band Firekites consists of 1910 individual chalk drawings. It took co-directors Lucinda Schreiber and Yanni Kronenberg six-months to complete the project from start to finish. Every day, after shooting, their bodies and laptops were covered in chalk dust. Looking at the end result, though, I’m sure it was all worth it.
The concept of PSST! is quite simple: a growing collection of films, each comprised of three sections produced by three different teams. It’s a technique derived from the Dadaist game of Exquisite Corpse and the children’s game of Chinese whispers. Six new films have just been released in the last week under the banner of PSST!3. This one, called Alter Ego Dark Destiny The End, is directed by Takeo Hatai, Bryan Lee and Thomas Schmid.

But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. I’ve been waiting for a group like this. These New Puritans are balls in your face, 100 miles an hour, pure attack! A young British group that has most of the UK press in the palm of their skinny pale hands, they hint at a sonic mash of Bloc Party mixed with what White Rose Movement were supposed to be. What more could you want?
