
Fresh buns? BakerTweet knows it
There are few things better than eating warm pastries straight out of the oven. Imagine pain au chocolate, flaky, buttery, and warm, saturated with dripping melted chocolate. That’s what eating pastries is all about. Happily there is now BakerTweet, a device installed at bakeries that enables busy bakers to alert the Twitter world when something is hot out of the oven. Albion Café in London is the first bakery to use the device, and for someone recently obsessed with Twitter, I can’t get enough of following their updates to know when baguettes and buns and, as they write, ‘steamy, syrupy apple turnovers’ are making their way out of the oven. And I don’t even live in London! The imagery of these delectable updates is almost enough. All I can do now is hope that BakerTweet makes its way to a boulangerie near me.

Argentinian illustrator Gustavo Aimar’s version of the Deluge is full of light and peace in it’s inherent simplicity and wondrous naivety. Generally speaking, the innocence and playfulness of childhood is never far from the core symbolic theme in Aimar’s works.
Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’
A Melbourne native once said to me: to find the good bars, you have to look for the bins in alleyways. Section 8 totally fits that quota. It is a bar that is a. in an alleyway, and b. filled with trash. As enticing as that sounds, I must make it clear that the alleyway is actually an old carpark in Chinatown and the trash is not exactly trash. But don’t let that stop you. Section 8 is pumping. Wolf and Cub are back with a brand new single and after listening to it, I feel like I should be out in the streets, warning my neighbours of the apocalypse. The song is huge, forceful, damming and painfully exciting. Joel Byrne’s half-drawl, half-howl proclaims the end, while (in true Wolf and Cub) the drums are epic and unsettling. And then, that moment, the bass against the fading echoes. My heart broke and my brain exploded. It’s too much to take. This band will be the death of me.
