China’s proposed Ren Building

The RÉN building, designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group, is a proposal for a hotel, sports and conference centre created specifically for Shanghai’s World Expo 2010. According to the plans, the building is ‘conceived as two buildings merging into one. The first building, emerging from the water, is devoted to the activities of the body, and houses the sports and water culture centre. The second building, emerging from land, is devoted to the spirit and enlightenment and houses the conference centre and meeting facilities. The two buildings meet in a 1,000 room hotel and form the Chinese character for the word People, becoming a recognizable landmark for the World Expo in China’. [photo via e-Architect]

The Kissaway Trail on My Secret Playlist

The Kissaway Trail have a new album entitled Sleep Mountain due for release on April 20, via Bella Union. Sleep Mountain adds in dabs of electronica to the breadth of guitars for a contemporary and vulnerable rock classic. We asked them about the music that inspired the recording. They started with the Joanna Newsom song, Peach, Plum, Pear [listen below]: ‘A really good song from a great debut album, made by one of the best female artists ever’. Connect the Dots tattoos

In my next life, the one that will be spent in a daze walking lazily up and down the hipster dome of Brooklyn’s Bedford Avenue, high fiving passing musicians, and eating cheap noodles from the local deli, I’ll have one connect the dot tattoo that spells out the name of my band. And another with the name of my ex-girlfriend. Ah, yes. That will be cool, indeed.

I’ve always been an avid follower of the Comfort Station brand in Cheshire St, London, so I decided to pop in on Sunday to have a look at their new collection. It’s unique and different, featuring railway tracks and my favourite barometer necklaces, where you can rate the way you, or someone you’ve just met, is feeling, with indications of stormy, fair and excellent.

New York-based Japanese artist Shusaku Arakawa designed this small apartment block in 2005 in the Tokyo suburb of Mitaka in conjunction with his poet partner, Madeline Gins. According to the SushiLog: ‘Painted in eye-catching blue, pink, red, yellow and other bright colors, the building resembles the indoor playgrounds that attract toddlers at fast-food restaurants. Inside, each apartment features a dining room with a grainy, surfaced floor that slopes erratically, a sunken kitchen and a study with a concave floor. Electric switches are located in unexpected places on the walls so you have to feel around for the right one. A glass door to the veranda is so small you have to bend to crawl out’. Read more

There’s something quite attractively kitsch about the Lucky Dragons’ latest release, Dream Island Laughing Language. It’s undoubtedly unusual, and not too friendly on the ears, but something warm and fuzzy keeps creeping out of the broken drum rhythms and looped vocals. It’s a mish-mash of jangly folk licks, Squarepusher-style drum ‘n bass with a few Coco Rosie-esque experimental sound effects thrown in: intriguing, original, and fairly hard to describe!
