Melbourne’s Section 8
Melbournes laneways are cluttered with themed, designer bars. The challenge seems to be which is the most hip, funky and individual bar. Step in Section 8, an old inner city carpark furbished with warehouse pallets, patio heaters and a couple of freight containers, converted to serve you drinks. The vibe is fittingly low-key, with background music played at a reasonable level, frequently changing decor, and a variety of options to quench your thirst. It’s casual, fun and simple. Following the success of the Red Hummingbird on Russell Street in Melbourne, famous for its hummingbird wallpaper, those same owners have recently opened The Emerald Peacock bar and restaurant on Londsdale Street. While I’m sure the food and drink is fantastic, it’s the interior that’s creating all the buzz. It again features signature wallpaper, which was used as the starting point for the entire design. Each space within the venue is slightly different, with eclectic fabrics and furnishings combining to create a decadent, moody feel. The Emerald Peacock also boasts a rooftop bar for glimpses of the city skyline.
A Melbourne native once said to me: to find the good bars, you have to look for the bins in alleyways. Section 8 totally fits that quota. It is a bar that is a. in an alleyway, and b. filled with trash. As enticing as that sounds, I must make it clear that the alleyway is actually an old carpark in Chinatown and the trash is not exactly trash. But don’t let that stop you. Section 8 is pumping. Filled with forklift pallets for your seating pleasure, this little bar-that-could (also known as the Container Bar) makes a refreshing beverage and plays super cool beats all night. Read more

The Good Afternoon clock by Mile Project just shouts design. It’s simple, creative and makes great use of modern technology. The look speaks for itself, a white circular frame with tiny holes that lets a bright and powerful focused LED light beam stream out, creating the second, minute and hour hands of a clock.
Some cool designer cityscape blinds by Elina Aalto, with options including Paris, Tokyo, Stockholm and Helsinki. I’m not sure as how practical they are, as when you close your blinds, you don’t want to let any light. But maybe someone has a place for them somewhere.

I’ve been reading Julia Wertz’s web comic, The Fart Party, which is simply a first person account of her every day life. The artwork is pretty rudimentary, but that works to the comic’s advantage, making it rather accessible and earnest seeming. Updated every few days, it’s not hard to keep up, and you never have to wait long to get your next fix.
Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion. Contrary to the council’s intentions, black metal is as popular as ever in Malaysia, and is a recognizable cultural touchstone there, as indicated by the above clip from the 2005 film Filem Rock.
No wave is alive and well, if Brooklyn duo Talk Normal are any indication. Drummer Andrya Ambro keeps things cohesive with surprisingly precise percussion, occasionally banging on such things as an electric guitar and an old iron pipe rigged with contact mics, while guitarist Sarah Register coaxes some unnerving and discordant noises from her axe and array of pedals. The two take turns shouting abstract and absurdist lyrics with voices like hi-tech valkyries from a futurist nightmare.
