The True Vine Record Shop
The True Vine is a great little record shop in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore. Specializing in rare, vintage, and ethnic records and CDs, the store is a great place to just browse for something weird and unexpected rather than a place to search for something specific, which is part of its charm. It’s a also a great place to research local Baltimore music, and their old location on 36th St used to host shows, so I’m sure their new digs on Hickory Ave around the corner will do the same. The store also has a musical electronics department in case you need some repairs on a synthesizer or you’re looking for a good deal on some used equipment.

Ourself Beside Me is the band formed by Yang Fan, formerly of all-girl garage punk band Hang On the Box. Beginning as a minimalist, jangly, indie-punk outfit several years ago, the Beijing-based trio has evolved into a more psychedelic, expansive, and experimental project. Its self-titled debut album (produced by P.K.14’s Yang Haisong) shows influences as wide-ranging as Syd Barrett, Can, Talking Heads, and spaced-out contemporary acts from the West — ducktails and Wet Hair come to mind. Yet another diamond in the rough of Beijing rock. Look for them next year at SXSW.
Aimee van Drimmelen’s drumskin paintings
Montreal-based illustrator Aimee van Drimmelen has been collecting used drumskins from local musicians and painting on them. The results are beautiful and for sale (along with her other work) through her etsy store. Read more
Designer Kieran Ionescu apprenticed in Hungary under a master cobbler and has returned to the States to ply his trade in Durham, North Carolina. His company, BlackArm Bespoke, specializes in custom, handmade shoes that he makes himself using the traditional methods he learned abroad. It’s good to see yet another up-and-coming craftsman keeping old trades alive.

London-based indie-prog group Klaxons take their name from the Greek word ‘to shriek’. We interviewed vocalist and keyboardist, Jamie Righton, and asked him why, unlike many of their contemporaries, none of them grew up to become great footballers: ‘Me and Simon are from Stratford-upon-Avon and the only famous footballer to ever come from there is Gary Barnett! Jamie’s from Bournemouth and there are even less from there. I was asked to play for the Tottenham Hotspur Legends and Celebrities team in a new Sky TV programme but it clashes with our US tour. I’m not much of a jewelry guy, but if bling is in order, it’s ordered from my man Osa at Complete Technique. Originally from Japan, Osa is now based in Dumbo, Brooklyn and makes the finest metal jewelry, on par with any of his ancestor’s samurai swords. From speaker rings to turntable pendants, it’s all fresh and mostly music or hip-hop related. He’s been at it for about ten years and works harder than most people I know. If you need some jewelry, show him some love.
San Fransisco-based artist Alexis MacKenzie must be patient. She has to be in order to create beautiful collages from the vintage books that she collects. There’s an amazing amount of detail in each piece. Elements are painstakingly transplanted from book to paper with scissors and glue. No Photoshop cut n’ pastes here.

I don’t get Flight of The Concords. I just don’t find it funny. I also don’t get most comedy these days. It’s so derivative and clichéd. Everyone wants the same laughs. I like comedy that pushes the boundaries in strange ways. Fonejack is one underground unit that have had me rolling around on the floor with their real life skits. Read more

Formerly the lead singer of the Stones Roses – an eclectically talented group that never quite reached full potential – he has since carved out a successful solo career, moving well beyond the poppy melodrama of Fools Gold and into a more left-field sonic terrain.
