Honeymoon Bay, New South Wales
|There’s something slightly unnerving about camping in a firing range, but last weekend, some friends and I thought we’d give it a try. Located approximately three and a half hours south of Sydney, Honeymoon Bay is a peaceful little oasis which just happens to be inside the Department of Defence’s Beecroft Weapons Range. Owned by the Australian Navy, the area has regularly been used for Defence weapons and other training activities since the 1800s. However, on weekends and during school holidays, the remarkably intact and incredibly beautiful peninsula is also open for camping, bushwalking, fishing and mountain biking. And if you’re not disturbed by the ever-present ‘live firing range’ signs, it’s definitely the spot for a relaxing and surprisingly tranquil getaway. [photos by Andrew Whitehead]

After weeks of packing Australia’s crate with the best of Aussie nightlife, our crate was farewelled in lavish style at the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange send-off party in Sydney last week. We discovered Australia is swapping with Brazil, so we’re hanging out for the samba and cachaça to sway ashore and lead us astray. With the streets of New York already covered in a thin layer of ice after a heavy snowstorm yesterday, it’s interesting to see how other cold winter cities deal with this ubiquitous companion. At the annual Ice and Snow Festival, in Haban, China, they get kinda creative with it: building an entire city out of ice and then lighting it up like an extra frosty, colourful Christmas tree. I’m about to reveal my true, nerdy colours to you all. The recently released Google Zeitgeist 2010 gives a fascinating overview of what the world was thinking this year by showing us what it searched. Oh World, Justin Bieber? What were you thinking?
Already with a Spectrum show under their belt, The Archerbolds are an up and coming Australian band well worth checking out. I saw the Sydney-based lads play recently at the Mars Hill Café and it was evident that they should be permanently rocking out on a real stage; not in front of coffee sippers. Their floating lyrics, smart guitar riffs and meaty bass lines are infused by The Strokes, Mars Volta, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin — ultimately producing a freshly spun modern-vintage sound. Lead vocalist and guitarist Geoffrey ‘Gep’ Rectin says The Archerbolds plan to create a solid sound for next year: ‘Over summer, we’re recording an EP and working on a set sound, defining more of an image’. If their track, Rest Your Soul, is anything to go by, then it should be pretty dandy.
A former interior decorator known for her clever use of colour, Dyment’s jewelry designs are informed by the same colourful aesthetic. Sophisticated and contemporary, her collection, including rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces, combines gems and diamonds, each stone carefully selected and arranged by Dyment, and then set in polished eighteen-carat gold. There’s also a Honeymoon Bay (Whangaikorea) on Lake Rotoiti, Rotorua, New Zealand. Spent Christmas holidays there as a child, fond memories.
