The Watchmen
by An adults only high-concept hero movie with a changeling storyline, this is a film that should not be dismissed as another Spiderman or Superman clone. At the foreground is the question of which battles our heroes should fight. In comics, those with superpowers fight the bad guys to save the good guys. But in the real world, who is good and bad is often a matter of perspective, and this movie examines that difficult question. It then goes further, analysing what our heroes should do when it’s the humans that are the problem. As a species, we are our own worst enemy. So how do the heroes go about saving ourselves from ourselves? The ending left many in the packed mainstream cinema I was in wondering what the hell was going on, but I agreed with it. And it’s the bravest conclusion to a movie I’ve seen since Fight Club. Also, there are some amazing action sequences, awesome bits of violence, and great eye candy.

A delightful uncomfortable film, told from the point of view of a broken woman. Kevin’s just not right, and that’s obvious from the outset as mother Eva battles to bring him up in a world where the onus is put squarely back on the mother. The intensity is poured on throughout, as tragedy seems imminent. Read more
