Henrique Oliveira’s recycled paintings
Henrique Oliveria is an artist affected by his surroundings. As a student in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Oliveira harvested the remains of the fence outside his window, which had begun to peel and break in layers of color, and turned it into a hurricane of art for his senior show. Tapumes, Portuguese for the wood Oliveira uses, is ubiquitous throughout Sao Paulo. Each piece has been recycled from dumpsters and landfills all over Sao Paulo and are tucked into PVC skeleton structures to achieve the desired look. Oliveira’s newest show, appropriately named Tapumes, will be on display between March 26 and May 9 at the Rice Gallery in Houston, Texas.

Eco skyscraper design in Philadelphia
Philadelphia’s 58-floor Comcast building has been awarded the Gold Certification for LEED-CS (core and shell). The obelisk-formed building, which sits right above the Suburban railway station, boasts high performance glass and sunscreens, which helps keep out 60 per cent of the sun’s heat and contains 70 per cent of the site’s available light. The building also boasts high-efficiency water utilities, allowing for 40 per cent less of water consumption than a traditional office building. The building, Gold certified LEED by the architect Robert A.M. Stern, is one of the first, but certainly not the last, skyscraper to get certified.

As a child, I took piano exams in over-sized white rooms, on baby grand pianos that felt unfamiliar and echoed strangely as someone across the room observed me in silence. UK-based one-man-band Sieben has a new album out: As They Should Sound. Frontman Matt Howden builds songs with a loop pedal and a violin, which he uses for rhythm and melody. His sound is wonderfully sophisticated and cabalistic, with a particularly British sense of lyricism.
