Platinum Brunette
I’m a massive fan of Platinum Brunette, a trio of cross-dressing Sydney rockers who belt out excellent hair metal riffs and hilarious lyrics. Starting the band was long time dream for lead singer and bass player Justin (aka Demonica Lewinsky), who had ads posted up around the city for some time seeking guys tough enough to wear dresses on stage. Their songs are damn catchy, my favourite being their single, BMW (Bitch Mother Whore), with the classic chorus line: ‘You are a bitch, I am a whore. We are both cunts, you are my mother’. These guys (girls?) put on one hell of a stage-show, always getting the audience up dancing, and laughing. They are one of the most entertaining live acts I have ever seen, and I’d recommend them to Sydneysiders who want a good night out.

In the summers of 2006 and 2007, the group floated down the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to New Orleans on a flotilla of handmade rafts. Crafted mainly from junk and recycled materials, the rafts ran on wind and solar power, were fuelled by bio-diesel, and their crew subsisted on rainwater and dumpstered meals for the entire journey. Free Spirit Sphere tree houses
Eve and Eryn, two amazing Free Spirit Sphere tree houses, are located in Vancouver, Canada, high up in the canopy of the West Coast rainforest. They are, as their creators describe, ’suspended like pendants from a web of rope’ from the trees. This is a unique way of creating unobtrusive means of living amongst nature. Insulated and set up for one or two people to stay in, these spheres allow people to experience the ‘energy shift’ that occurs ‘once one breaks contact with the ground’. Read more

This isn’t an outdoor art installation, but it is still somewhat curated. Or maybe hoarded is a better description. Somewhere in the inner western suburb of Sydney’s Summer Hill, there is a brightly coloured collection of garden gnomes on display. The owner of the home is yet to be seen, but there are hundreds of gnomes, side by side, all with equally dopey expressions on their faces and accompanied by a second fixation: caterpillar soft toys. Ed Janssen is famed in Melbourne for his jewellery designs, sold through cult Morrissey-friendly label This Charming Man. ‘The Knuckle Sandwich’ charm necklace (two pieces of bread on either side of a tiny set of brass knuckles, as pictured above) exudes an oddly amusing menace. More recently ‘The Bear Trap’ has been dangling from every second neck, wiping out hope for Melbourne’s unsuspecting tiny forest animals. Janssen is about to launch a new range inspired by the iconography of various secret societies.
