Melbourne’s sensory smorgasbord

The fabulously over-indulgent Melbourne Food and Wine Festival kicked off this past weekend, promising to deliver an epicurean odyssey for seventeen palate-pleasing days. Satisfying the appetites of 300,000-plus attendees, the festival boasts over 200 events including the classic ‘world’s longest lunch’, which will serve 1,200 diners at a 400 meter, linen-lined table. A newbie to this year’s scene is Feasting Vignettes, set to run during the normally wearisome weekday working hours. Random foodie sights will pop-up in various locations around Melbourne’s Central Business District intending to serve as an amuse bouche for the coming weekend.

Bordering on a kind of epicurean installation art, wine barrels, garden gnomes, wheelbarrows, and a farmgate will sporadically dot the cityscape, while lawns, rooftops, and squares undergo transformations themed-up around Australiana kitsch. Connex Sizzel — a celebration of the Aussie barbecue under the setting of Federation Square, dolled up as a 1950s suburban backyard—is also expected to the join the ranks of events showcased during the coming weekdays.
