Secret Mommy
Andy Dixon, aka Secret Mommy, pieces together glitched-out dance tracks often out of unusual field recordings. His album, Very Rec, is a danceable sound collage, focusing completely on making beats out of animal sounds, laughing children, grunting weight-lifters, people playing tennis, and other unusual sample sources while eschewing the emo-ish vocals he sometimes includes in his other work.

Things continue to improve for New York’s metal scene, if Batillus are any indication. The sludge/doom trio from Brooklyn offer crushingly heavy, down-tuned and down-tempo instrumental riffage that sounds like what a mutant that has crawled out of Newtown Creek might have on his iPod. The band recently added vocalist Fade Kainer of Inswarm (Jarboe’s touring band) to its line-up.
