Ioulex: Julia Koteliansky and Alexander Kerr
We asked Ioulex (pronounced ‘yoo-leks’), the creative team of Julia Koteliansky and Alexander Kerr, about where they draw their creative inspirations from: ‘We look at painting, performance art and theatre; dance is a great source of inspiration. Cinema is probably the most important visual reference; we like to think of models as characters in a movie and often bring film stills to a shoot. There are so many things we want to try out. We keep a list of ideas, so when it’s time to plan a specific shoot, we check to see what would be appropriate and how we could make it work for the magazine or the client. So we start with lots of visual references, then focus on a specific look and feel. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right angle’.

Lookie here! A bike path in Seoul that plays music as people ride over it. The path is made of planks of wood of varying lengths that trigger little hammers when people ride over them, creating little percussive notes. Happy fun place yay!

There’s something quite attractively kitsch about the Lucky Dragons’ latest release, Dream Island Laughing Language. It’s undoubtedly unusual, and not too friendly on the ears, but something warm and fuzzy keeps creeping out of the broken drum rhythms and looped vocals. It’s a mish-mash of jangly folk licks, Squarepusher-style drum ‘n bass with a few Coco Rosie-esque experimental sound effects thrown in: intriguing, original, and fairly hard to describe!
