Cat Lauighan’s experimental typography
|French artist and designer Cat Lauighan lives in Brooklyn where she creates experimental typography and compelling mixed media works with a uniquely muted color palette. Her illustrations were recently featured in the latest and final issue of the always interesting Amelia’s Magazine. By her own admission, she hates ‘cheese and snails and loves to eat eggs’.

Lubalin Now at New York’s Cooper Union
Herb Lubalin’s influence as a graphic designer is undeniable, and now his name graces the side of the new building at Cooper Union. The inaugural exhibit of the Lubalin Center just opened with the beautiful Mike Essl-curated show, Lubalin Now. I’ve been noticing recently that design exhibitions have been blowing away more traditional fine art shows and this one is no exception. It’s quite exciting to see the influence this man has had on many of today’s young top designers. Standouts for me were the pieces by Deanne Cheuk, Alex Trochut, Justin Thomas Kay and Rick Valicenti. The show continues until Dec 8.
November is shaping up to be Typographic month in New York. On November 5 there’s the official opening of Lubalin Now — the inaugural exhibition at the newly re-located Herb Lubalin Study Center at the Cooper Art Union, featuring beautiful typography from the likes of Alex Trochut, Huntergatherer and Non-Format [featured above]. Pure graphic simplicity is how Canadian illustrator Raymond Biesinger swings. Employing various textures, typography and found elements throughout his heavily conceptual creations, Beisinger presents a wonderfully consistent body of work.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Located on West Houston, Alphaville is my favorite gift store in Manhattan. Days Off is an incredibly catchy but smart punk band from Chicago. While they’re the best of what pop music through the ages has to offer, they’re by no means pop-punk. As infectious as their hooks and choruses are, there are enough off-kilter rhythms and complex guitar work to give their music a layered feel, putting them into a category all their own.
