Sydney’s Mu Meson Archives
On a weekly basis, Jay Katz and Miss Death, who run Sydney’s Mu Meson Archives, present to the public some of the most obscure films known to humankind. In the past fortnight viewers were treated several ‘marginalised movies’, including Robert Downey Senior’s little known Pound, in which humans ‘play the role of animals in cages as they wait to be gassed’, and the bizarre Men Who Stare at Goats, which chronicles the secret operations of the US Army’s First Earth Battalion. Films are shown both at the Archives themselves, located in a warehouse space in the inner-city suburb of Annandale, and at the Annandale Hotel, one of Sydney’s most famous live music venues. Coming up on February 23 is the cult 3D sci-fi movie Gog, while on February 27 the Archives will screen rare footage of the Manson Family, accompanied by Sydney band The Mansons playing songs written by Charles himself.

The Miss Rockaway Armada is a group of about thirty artists, musicians and performers who hail from across the United States. In the summers of 2006 and 2007, the group floated down the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to New Orleans on a flotilla of handmade rafts. Crafted mainly from junk and recycled materials, the rafts ran on wind and solar power, were fuelled by bio-diesel, and their crew subsisted on rainwater and dumpstered meals for the entire journey. Free Spirit Sphere tree houses
Eve and Eryn, two amazing Free Spirit Sphere tree houses, are located in Vancouver, Canada, high up in the canopy of the West Coast rainforest. They are, as their creators describe, ’suspended like pendants from a web of rope’ from the trees. This is a unique way of creating unobtrusive means of living amongst nature. Insulated and set up for one or two people to stay in, these spheres allow people to experience the ‘energy shift’ that occurs ‘once one breaks contact with the ground’. Read more

Australian illustrator Ken Taylor has created imagery for some of rock n’ ’roll’s great purveyors of sound, from the Rolling Stones and Queens of the Stone Age, to Nine Inch Nails and the Mars Volta. He has an easily recognizable style that screams sharp edge cool. Bold and bawdy, Taylor’s pieces use vivid colour to create a cut-out-comic-like feel reminiscent of old movie posters from the 1930s and 40s.
I’ve been living in Greenpoint Brooklyn for a couple of years now and one of the highlights is brunch on the weekends. After living in Crown Heights for seven years, where your only choices are Tom’s Diner or Popeye’s Fried Chicken, it’s an amazing change of pace. Breathing Earth is a morbid reference website that’s simply a flash map that tells you a country’s population, birth and death rates, and how much CO2 it emits. Read more

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
