Oscar Rabin
|When I was in high school, my art class went on a field trip to see an exhibition of dissident soviet art at Rutgers University. One of the artists that struck me the most was Oscar Rabin, whose expressive, moody paintings appealing to my love of illustration and pop art. Referencing the contemporary, everyday ephemera of mid-century Russia — drab buildings, empty vodka bottles, religious relics, newspapers — Rabin drew the ire of communist authorities. The Moscow-born painter became the leader of the non-conformist artist movement, which culminated in the famous ‘bulldozer exhibition’ in 1974, when police shut down an illegal show by bulldozing it. Eventually, Rabin was exiled to France, where he remains. Beyond the struggles he faced under authoritarian rule, Rabin’s work has a brooding, ominous, yet playful quality to them that has inspired me since.
