C. Spencer Yeh

Taiwan-born, Cincinnati-based improv musician C. Spencer Yeh builds abstract but cohesive compositions using violin, electronics, vocals, and various other means of sound manipulation. Establishing himself through his solo project, Burning Star Core, Yeh also frequently collaborates with noise bigwigs such as John Wiese, Carlos Giffoni, Tony Conrad, Thurston Moore, Double Leopards, and many others. Taking a modernist approach to his pieces, Yeh strives to create an audio vocabulary that is self-contained within his body of work, but as heady as that sounds, his atmospheric pieces have an obvious order to them, which makes them more engaging than your run-of-the-mill avant-noise. Check out his remix of Cryptacize’s track, Mini-Mythomania.

I had the pleasure of meeting painter Maria Calderon a few years back through some mutual friends. Even then her work was stunning. It seemed as though you could stand back and take in everything you thought you could, and if you moved up to a piece, you were pulled in to all the different stories, different landscapes, within a single painting. The vibrant colors and never ending spacial trickery really does it for me.

Melbourne designer Lilian Darmono and her co-director partner Mungo Horey were asked by Red Bee to come up with some ideas for the new children’s channel, ABC 3 Australia. Their idea for it ‘was centered around a magical world, in the shape of a giant 3, where all kinds of amazing things take place and unfold’. [See more Australian art and design at The Colour]

Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’
